The College of Arts and Sciences is Eastern’s historic college of the liberal arts, the oldest entity to offer undergraduate education among the university’s five colleges. For over eighty years, Eastern has been developing students who are equipped to work for transformation, justice, and reconciliation. These ideals flow from the faculty’s commitment to work out what it means to be disciples of Christ in a changing and needy world. Drawing on the rich tradition of the liberal arts through a perspective informed by devotion to Christ, faculty and students in the College of Arts seek to understand how to be knowledgeable, skilled, wise, and Christ-like participants in a global and multi-ethnic society and church.

A primary emphasis in the College of Arts and Sciences is the mentoring, conversation, and collaborative questioning that a residential environment offers. This environment, in the great tradition of the liberal arts, offers students an opportunity to grapple with questions of meaning, purpose, and calling while developing important skills necessary for today’s employment and volunteer settings. Within Eastern’s College of Arts and Sciences, students do not simply gain skills and knowledge.  They do gain job preparation.  But students also become prepared for the complex thinking, ethical understanding, and intelligent leadership necessary for today’s world.

Students are challenged to grow spiritually and to carry their faith into their chosen profession. Opportunities to study abroad and to undertake internships further enable students to grow and learn. The University is large enough to offer a multitude of clubs, athletic programs, service opportunities, and resources, including a state-of-the-art library, while the College is small enough to enable close relationships between faculty and students and collaborative approaches to learning.

Come and see how the College’s students, faculty, and programs strive to meld the best aspects of a residential liberal arts college, a diverse and varied university, and a robust Christian commitment to advance faith, reason, and justice.
