What We Offer

We prepare students for careers related to medicine, environmental biology, laboratory research, and education. Science is the study of God’s works. As Christians, we are privileged to seek to wisely use this knowledge to serve others in the name of Christ.

Degrees and Tracks

  • B.S. in Biology: for entrance into graduate study.
    • Medical track: for pre-med, pre-dental, pre-vet and pre-PT.
    • Field Biology track: for graduate and professional work in ecology and related disciplines.
    • General Biology track: for graduate and professional work in sub-disciplines of Biology.
  • B.A. in Biological Studies.  For field or laboratory work.
  • B.A. in Environmental Studies.  Interdisciplinary preparation for law, regulatory and policy work.
  • B.S. in Biology and M.Ed. (5 year program). For secondary science education; graduates are state-certified.
  • B.S. in Biochemistry.  Offered jointly with the Dept. of Chemistry.  For entrance into graduate study.

Academic Excellence demonstrated by

  • Instrumentation and academic resources
Biology lab capabilities include PCR, DNA and protein gel electrophoresis, and gene cloning.  Anatomy and physiology labs have hardware and software for data collection such as ECG and EMG.  Cell biology tools include fluorescent microscopes with video enhancement capabilities, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and laminar flow hoods for cell culture. Eastern’s campus of 115 acres includes three lakes, wetlands and forest ecosystems that provides many opportunities for field work.
  • Faculty
Our full-time faculty are all published, and actively involved in research, service projects and/or extension teaching. Many have received honors for teaching and significant grants for research including funding from the NIH.
  • Student research or internships
Majors are encouraged to participate in cellular and molecular biology or parasitology projects, which are active areas of research in our department, or pursue an internship. Some of the many internships students have done include: work with the Pennsylvania DEP; public health promotion and assessment in Belize; molecular pathology of tumor progression at Fox Chase Center – Philadelphia, PA; radiology research at Hershey Medical Center; and policy analysis related to wetland and clean water regulations with the Sierra Club, Washington, D.C.

What our Graduates Do

  • Medical careers include M.D., D.O., D.D., P.A. and P.T.
  • Field biology alumni go on for graduate study (M.S. or Ph.D.) for research or management, or work in consulting, remediation, interpretation or regulation.
  • Laboratory biology alumni (such as cell biology or genetics) also go to graduate school or work in pharmaceutical research, basic biological research and other areas.
  • Environmental Studies alumni go on to Law School, or work in advocacy, remediation, regulation or interpretation.
  • Some alumni combine science with Christian ministry, in medicine, the environment or education internationally.
