VOLUNTEERING AND PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE (FOR PRE-MED AND PRE-PA)

Besides grades and standardized tests, research opportunities and volunteer experience with patients add dimension to your application.  It is essential to volunteer at a hospital, clinic or work with a doctor in your field of interest to gain some real exposure to medicine.  You may wish to do this during the summers in your hometown or see next page for some local volunteer opportunities close to Eastern University.  This experience is extremely important!  How are these experiences assessed by medical school admission committees?  Three criteria are used: length of time invested, depth of experience, and lessons learned.  Those who wish to apply to schools of osteopathic medicine (DO programs) must have shadowed a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.).
