Chemistry

“… an excellent environment in which to learn both academically and spiritually. With well-taught classes, a demanding course of study and actively involved faculty, I am so blessed to have the opportunity to participate in this program.”
[ Carolyn Pennay, ]

What We Offer

  • B.S. Chemistry – classic and innovative theory and laboratory skill development
  • B.S. Biochemistry – modern studies at the interface of chemistry and biology
  • B.A. Chemistry-Business – unique training in business skills and technical knowledge

The majors in the Eastern University Chemistry Department involve a rigorous study of molecular processes through the lens of the Christian faith.  Deeply committed faculty provide strong mentoring relationships to support and challenge.

Academic Excellence demonstrated by

  • Research
Students work side by side with faculty to engage in original research.  Projects include the cloning and analysis of virulence-associated proteins of a bacterial pathogen, organic synthesis of cyclopropyl derivatives of liquid crystal structures for electronic devices, synthesis of polymer-gold nanocomposites for diagnostic imaging and possible treatment of cancer,  and theoretical modeling of strained molecules.
  • Instrumentation
Students gain extensive hands-on experience with advanced instruments such as 300 MHz FT-NMR, FT-IR, GC-MS, AAS, Diode-array UV-Vis, HPLC, FPLC, DSC, SEM, and PCR.
  • Innovative Teaching
Students learn to think critically and communicate clearly.

What our Graduates Do

Graduates from the chemistry majors at Eastern University are pursuing advanced degrees in organic chemistry, molecular biology, medicine and law.  Others are working for high-profile pharmaceutical companies, such as Merck and Centocor, or are working as high school chemistry teachers.
