
Communication is the study of human symbolic behavior. Communication courses are designed to help students learn both to communicate more effectively and to analyze human communication behavior in a range of diverse settings. The mission of the Communication Studies Department is to encourage and equip students to become competent, creative, and ethical communicators who integrate Eastern University’s commitment to faith, reason, and justice into each communication act. We explore critically the strategies, practices, theories, and technologies that constitute the multiple ways that meaning is co-created.
In the Department of Communication Studies students and faculty grapple with the rich, complex history and theories of communication. We study how this rapidly-evolving field influences the lives of individuals, communities, organizations, and nations. Our study of communication and its myriad manifestations is informed by our Christian faith.
Each Communication Studies student pursues a Bachelor or Arts degree and completes a core of 30 hours that focuses on the history, theory, and scholarship of the communication discipline. In addition, each student selects one of three concentrations:
