J. Christopher Bittenbender, Ph. D., chairs the Department and teaches courses in Twentieth Century British literature,  Irish and Scottish Literature, James Joyce, and American Literature. Chris received his doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and has a strong interest in Scottish literature. He has published articles on James Kelman, Alasdair Gray, Robert Crawford, and Robert Burns. He has also served as an editor at Running Press Book Publishers.

Nancy Thomas, MA, teaches courses in the novel and in writing, including the advanced course in poetry and the senior writing seminar. She also accompanies the college choir and works actively in Eastern's interaction with the Barry School. She is a published poet and enjoys stimulating creativity in others.

Joyce Munro, MA, teaches the following in the creative writing and journalism programs: Autobiography and Biography, Short Fiction,  Drama, Essay, and Advanced Journalism. Her specialty is narrative as it is used in short fiction, memoir, and journalism. She has worked as a professional writer for 30 years, writing book-length commissioned works, articles and essays as well as short fiction and drama. She collaborated with the theater director, dance choreographer, and Eastern student actors to write a play called Labyrinth: I'm Not Going Anywhere Without You.

Vicky Blue Lemay, PhD, has degrees from the University of New Hampshire, the University of Utah, Boston College, and Indiana University. With an interest in aesthetics and postmodern theology, she teaches courses in Critical Theory, Shakespeare, the Renaissance, Milton, the Survey of British Literature, and Chaucer and the Medieval Period.  Her research interests include the Early Modern period, particularly Shakespeare and Herbert, as well as Renaissance art.

Rebecca Lauren Gidjunis, MFA, teaches courses in composition, postcolonial women's novels, and writing.  Besides creative writing, she is interested in gender studies and serves on the faculty of the Women's Studies May Term. Her first collection of poetry, The Schwenkfelders, was published in 2009 by Seven Kitchens Press and is a creative interpretation of her family's German religious history.  You can find her poetry in such prestigious literary journals as Prairie Schooner, Calyx and The Southeast Review.

Kat Hayes, MA, teaches first year writing classes including Fundamentals of Writing and College Writing.  She also teaches journalism classes including Applied Journalism and College Newspaper Practicum.  She values free and creative expression and serves as the advisor to The Waltonian, Eastern’s newspaper, and to Inklings, Eastern’s literary magazine.  She is a published poet.
