What We Offer

The English Department wants students to appreciate the transformative power of the written word. Through study, creation, and analysis of literature, students read, write, and think at a critical and creative level in preparation for careers where these skills are required. You will study diverse voices and styles of expression. You can choose three concentrations:

  • Literature*
  • Writing*
  • Journalism

* major or minor

English faculty are practitioners as well as professors in the fields related to their teaching.

Opportunities:

  • Writing Center training and experience
  • Barry school tutoring, summer camp, and other service projects
  • Internships
  • Oxford, L.A. film school, Washington Journalism Center and other study experiences
  • Work on student-run newspaper, literary journal, or yearbook
  • Semester-long work on senior literary thesis or creative project
  • Small upper-division seminar or workshop-style classes · Proximity to writer, theater, film events at other area universities and Philadelphia
