Immaculata University Department of Music Equivalency Program in Music Therapy
The equivalency program in music therapy at Immaculata University provides students enrolled in music degree programs at Eastern University with the opportunity of becoming eligible to enter the field of music therapy. This is accomplished by electing music therapy course work and clinical training at Immaculata University, during or following study at Eastern University. The equivalency program involves 20 credits of course work in music therapy, additional course work beyond music therapy (credits vary depending upon where courses are elected), 200 pre-internship clinical training hours (consisting of simulations, observations, and field work), and 1000 hours of internship (see page 2 for details). This program provides Eastern Students with the experience and competencies required to become candidates for music therapy board certification. Once a candidate, a student may take the certification examination administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Upon passing this examination, the candidate earns the credential Music Therapist—Board Certified (MT-BC), and thus attains professional status as a music therapist.
The equivalency program in music therapy at Immaculata University is based upon educational guidelines specified by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA). Immaculata University also offers the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy degree and the Master of Arts in Music Therapy degree, both of which are provided through programs approved by AMTA, and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
