This minor emphasizes that law and legal institutions should be understood within a liberal arts, interdisciplinary setting. Its focus is on helping students to become informed, active, well-rounded critical thinkers. Because law pervades our society, legal literacy is important for many careers. This minor does not focus so much on obtaining legal skills as on law as a central liberal art, and does provide a good background for students considering law school. The minor consists of seven courses with a core of five required courses.
HIS 435, INST 270, POS 214, POS 318, POS 342; choose one of the following: PHI 200, PHI 220, PHI 302; and choose one of the following: INST 420, BUSA 350, POS 380.
There is no pre-law major at Eastern. Law schools do not require applicants to take certain courses before applying, nor does the American Bar Association (ABA) recommend any particular major over another as better preparation for law school. What is important is that students develop certain skills, acquire some general background knowledge, and value the promotion of justice in our society.
