João M. Monteiro comes from the islands of Cape Verde, West Africa.  Until recently he was on the faculty of Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.  He is the co-creator and former Field Director of the Summer Program in Cape Verde, a joint program of the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.  His latest article, “From Coal Depot to Cesaria’s Home: Mindelo at the Crossroads of the World” appears in the volume Urbanization and African Cultures (Carolina Academic Press, 2005), edited by Toyin Falola and Steve Salm.  His professional interests include classical sociological theory, Christianity in West Africa, people movements and contemporary U.S. immigration, and inequality in the age of globalization.  João and his wife, Maria and son, Alex reside in Phoenixville, PA.

Michael Roberts began his professional career as a minister in the Church of the Nazarene.  After pastoring two churches in northern Indiana for a total of about 11 years, he accepted his first teaching assignment in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, in the fall of 1985.  During the next 17 years, Dr. Roberts held a number of positions including the Chair of the Sociology Department and the Chair of the Social Science Division.  In the fall of 2002, he accepted a position in the Sociology Department at Eastern University and is currently the chair of the department.  He has authored a number of papers, articles, and book chapters in the areas of sociology of religion and world hunger.  His professional interests include sociology of religion, congregational studies, urban sociology, research methods, and social statistics.  He and his wife, Kay have 4 grown children and 3 grandchildren.  They reside in Phoenixville, PA.

Mike Mtika is from Malawi. He worked for Ministry of Agriculture in Malawi as an Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Officer for 8 years. Upon being invited to join World Vision (Malawi Office), he worked for the organization for 6 years beginning as a Projects Coordinator moving on to Director of Technical Services and was the organization’s Operations (Projects) Director for the last three years of his work in World Vision. Before coming to Eastern University Dr. Mtika served on the faculty at the University of Alaska for 3 years. At Eastern University, Dr. Mtika has started the Tzomma Shoffa (Laboring Together) Initiative. He has students working with him. He and the students recycle used toner and inkjet cartridges and cell phones through which they raise funds that are used to finance community development initiatives in Africa. “I started Tzomma Shoffa to engage students in the recycling of trash that can be used to raise funds and help people who are underprivileged in Africa.” His professional interests include community development, social inequality, social justice, food security, social and embodied capital, social theory, and political sociology. Mike and his wife Annie are the parents of 3 children and 1 grandchild. They live in Lansdowne, PA.
