Program Description

The Online M.Ed. in Multicultural Education with a concentration in TESOL is committed to prepare professionals to work effectively with people from all cultural backgrounds and to provide English instruction to English learners in the United States and the world.

Program Goals

Graduates of the Online M.Ed. in Multicultural Education with a concentration in TESOL will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the comprehension of the complexity of cultural and linguistic diversity and its implications for student achievement.
  • Apply curricula, methodologies, and evaluation strategies best suited for students of diverse cultural and language backgrounds.
  • Reflect critically on their own assumptions and practices as a basis for personal transformation and vision creation that will benefit the student community.
  • Instruct English effectively to speakers of other languages.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills that promote educational equity for a diverse population.

Distinctives

  • The Online M.Ed. in Multicultural Education with a concentration in TESOL program integrates Eastern University’s mission of faith, justice, and reason to promote educational equity and social justice.
  • The completion time of the online M.Ed. program ranges between one to maximum seven years.
  • The flexible program design accommodates students who manage busy schedules or who live in different time zones.
  • The entire program, except TESOL field experience, is offered online to accommodate the needs of local, national, and international students. TESOL field experience can be complete on ground at the students’ locations with proper supervision.
  • Classes are offered in fall, spring, and summer semesters.
  • Applicants can enter Eastern University online M.Ed. program at multiple points throughout the year.
  • Students will have regular access to faculty with rich multicultural and international experiences through synchronous and asynchronous communication tools.
  • A 4-week summer study is possible at Eastern University for international students.

Transfer Credit Policy

Up to 9 credits may be transferred upon review and approval of the Program Director. The credits to be transferred should meet the following criteria:

  1. The credits were completed at the graduate level;
  2. The credits were taken at an accredited college or university;
  3. The credits were taken within the last seven years;
  4. A minimum grade of a ‘B’ was earned for each course.

Program Admissions Criteria

All post-baccalaureate students who wish to be admitted in certification or degree programs at the Master's level need to apply for graduate admission. In addition to submitting the online application, applicants must send the following documents indicated below to the CCGPS Admissions Office:

  • $35 application fee payable to Eastern University (apply online to have this fee waived)
  • Official transcript(s) from institution that granted your baccalaureate degree
  • Resume
  • Disclosure of Online Learning Expectations
  • Program of study (this evaluation will be done by the School of Education upon receipt of your transcripts)
  • 750-1000 word essay:

- Summarize how your personal characteristics, professional activities, and/or personal life experiences have led you to believe you are well suited for the education profession.

- Identify your personal and professional goals and discuss why you have chosen to apply to Eastern University's Education programs to fulfill those goals. Please include a discussion of your academic record and how it accurately reflects/does not reflect your intellectual and professional abilities.

  • International applicants from non-English speaking countries must provide an official report with a minimum TOEFL score of  213 (computer-based test) or 550 (written test)
