History

In 1967 the Elementary Education Major was initiated at Eastern University. Shortly thereafter, it became obvious that a facility with appropriate resources for aspiring teachers, and practicing student-teachers, was needed. The Curriculum Lab was established to provide a facility, equipment, and materials specifically for education majors to utilize. The Curriculum Lab was dedicated in March, 1997 to honor Helen S. Craymer, the retired professor whose vision and foresight culminated in the design and implementation of the Lab and Planetarium and who taught education in then Eastern College for thirty years. Since then, the Lab has been known affectionately as the Helen S. Craymer Curriculum Laboratory.

Location

The Curriculum Lab is located on the 3rd floor of McInnis Hall in the School of Education.

Available Materials

The Lab presently holds a large collection of professional, children’s and juvenile literature, as well as a substantial textbook collection. The Lab also holds an abundance of audiovisual and computer software, ephemeral materials and manipulatives for various grade levels. All Lab material is cataloged and classified for easy retrieval by students. This is an outstanding learning resource and facility, one of the best in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or, for that matter, anywhere else!

Planetarium

A part of the Lab’s design includes a Planetarium, established in 1972 and operated by Dr. David Bradstreet (dbradstreet@eastern.edu). The Julia Fowler Planetarium and the Bradstreet Observatory educate and entertain hundreds of school children each semester with its various programs. The Planetarium is open to the public on a weekly basis, and many of Eastern’s neighbors in the community take advantage of the opportunity to learn about astronomy.
