Academic Writing

Academic Writing Guidelines
There are many conventions that are acceptable in speech and informal writing which are not acceptable in formal academic writing. They include the following:

  1. Do not use contractions: Do not use contractions in formal writing – do not rather than don’t; cannot rather than can’t. Only use contractions if you are quoting a source that uses a contraction.
  2. Do not use 2nd person pronoun: In academic writing one never uses the 2nd person personal pronoun (you, yours), unless it is used in a quotation. This also includes using the imperative voice (giving a command). When writing reflectively or expressing a personal view/opinion, one should use the 1st person (I, me, we, us). When speaking generally, one should use the 3rd person pronoun (he, she, it, they, them)
  3. Do not begin sentences with conjunctions: Conjunctions are designed to connect words and phrases, not start sentences (e.g., or, but, and).
  4. Avoid etc: When describing a series of items, avoid using “etc.” at the end of the series. Usually it is unnecessary. If you feel there are more unnamed items that should be listed use the phrase “and so on” instead. Use etc. only in parentheses.
  5. Numbers: Numbers under ten should be written out (e.g., one, two, ...). Numbers ten and over can be written numerically (1, 2, ...) except when they begin a sentence.
  6. Abbreviations: All abbreviations (except units of measurement) and acronyms should be defined.

For additional guidelines on college writing consult the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL). This site provides worksheets on general writing and grammatical issues, as well as guidelines for organizing research papers and citing sources properly.
