Development Dialogues
“Development Dialogues” is a speaker series sponsored by the development programs of the School of Leadership and Development. Each year, this series brings some 14 speakers to the St. Davids campus, primarily from Christian and secular organizations involved in development work in the United States and around the world. The objective is to give the students a chance to engage and learn from development practitioners and their work in the field, and to network with them on issues of common interest.

Is it appropriate to measure the spiritual impact of work done by mission agencies, churches, and development organizations? Are there good ways to measure that impact? Are there churches, mission agencies, and development organizations who are already attempting to measure spiritual impact, and if so, what methods are they using and what challenges are they facing? This conference on spiritual metrics is designed to be a place where we prayerfully tackle these issues.

"Leading Courageously in the 21st Century"
Dinner and Annual Leadership Lecture
We were honored to have Mrs. Delores F. Brisbon as our guest speaker for this event. Through the topic "Leading Courageously in the 21st Century", Mrs. Brisbon will reflect on her own journey and speak about contemporary challenges such as leading through hard times, embracing diversity, enhancing organizations to respond to contemporary needs, and faithfully witnessing to God's justice and peace, among others.
Mrs. Delores F. Brisbon is a Christian servant, mother, grandmother, seasoned executive, community leader, and mentor. Mrs. Brisbon is a daily student of the Bible and a devout Christian. She is a widow, mother of two adult children and a grandmother of three. Currently, she is an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. She served the Monumental Baptist Church for thirty-six years, ten of which she was Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. For eight years, she served Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church where she established a Foundation and raised $1 million. Her life of service is motivated by a strong committed love of Jesus Christ.
Professionally, Mrs. Brisbon is a retired Chief Operating Officer of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Her tenure at the University of Pennsylvania began in 1959 and expanded twenty-six years ending in 1987. Beginning as a Head Nurse, she progressed to a Nurse Supervisor then to Strategic Planner before being named to the senior role of Chief Operating Officer. Her responsibilities included the management of a budget just over $300 million, 4000 or more employees and a medical school faculty of 700 physicians. Her leadership guided the operations providing an administrative structure and systems to effectively deliver health care services to persons served by the Hospital. She planned and guided to completion over $196 million in facilities improvement and construction.
Shortly after retirement from the University of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Brisbon founded a management consulting business which had as its clients medical school hospitals, foundations, municipal unions, municipal funding, and the Department of Health, City of Philadelphia. Assisted by her children in the business, the portfolio included organizational development and redesign, program and systems design, executive coaching, program advice for bond financing, health care delivery and human resources management, and leadership training. Her experience in governance training for not-for-profit organizations is extensive. Currently, Mrs. Brisbon is a governance mentor for INTRUST, Inc., a national organization which assists Theological Seminaries.
A volunteer community leader, Mrs. Brisbon has served over forty organizations as a Director of Trustee over a period of forty-five years. Currently, she is a President, Presbyterian Community Ministries of Delaware Valley; a Trustee, Presby Inspired Life; a Trustee, Eastern University and Chairperson, Strategic Planning; a Trustee, Mercy Health System and Chairperson, Mission and Ministry Committee. She has been honored more than seventy-five times for volunteer leadership; and has been recognized as a distinguished graduate of Tuskegee University for her contributions to professional and community leadership.
As a mentor, Mrs. Brisbon has guided the career of multiple young professionals. She is often sought as an advisor, speaker and leader to facilitate and mentor governance and leadership development.
Over the course of her professional career, Mrs. Brisbon has been honored by profiles in Ebony Magazine, Black Enterprise, Essence, The Philadelphia Tribune, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2005, she was designated a "History Maker".
