MA in International Development - Program Delivery
We currently offer our International concentration in three deliveries:
- A U.S. full-time cohort based program in Pennsylvania for full-time students - 15 months to complete. View upcoming class starts here
- An International cohort hybrid delivery model for practitioners working in Africa - 2 years to complete. View upcoming class starts here.
- Mission Year + Eastern Partnership Hybrid program - Urban concentration - 2 years to complete.
U.S. Full-Time MA Cohort - International or Urban concentrations - 15 months
This is a full-time 15 month program; 12 months in the US and 3 months in a developing country (required field semester).
This program is a cohort model, which has students start together in August and work through the program as a group. It starts with a required orientation, which is normally held the weekend before classes begin for the Fall semester.
Field Semester Component:
International concentration: Students enrolled in the on-campus program spend 12 months in the United States at the Eastern University campus. Their final semester (September to early December) is spent in a developing country to complete the program. During this field semester, students can return to their mission or development agency or begin work part-time with an NGO, mission organization or other church related organization that serves poor communities. At the same time they will also complete their final course work via distance education.
Urban concentration: Students enrolled in the on-campus program spend 12 months in the United States at the Eastern University campus. Their final semester (September to early December) is spent in an urban setting in the U.S.. At the same time they will also complete their final course work via distance education.
International Development Hybrid Delivery Model for the working professional - 2 years
The International concentration is also offered in a hybrid residency/on-line learning model to practitioners working in NGOs and non-profits. Students will come together annually in Africa for a 2.5 week residency and the "classroom" coursework for a few courses. Throughout the following year, they will complete the on-line portion of those courses, applying them to the work in their organization. The program is designed to support them in their work with their ministry.
Students will repeat the process the following year with the remaining courses in their program. This program takes two years to complete.
Dates for upcoming Overseas Residencies
Mission Year + Eastern International Development Hybrid - 2 years
This is a partnership program to earn an urban oriented, Christ-centered MA in International Development degree during a two year period. Participants will live in Mission Year houses and communities for the duration of the program. In year one, students gain experience and learn from heavily weighted practice in urban community service and relations, and will augment what they are learning through further reading, research, and reflection provided by Eastern University. Year two emphasis is shifted from field practicum toward formal learning through Eastern University, while still mentoring first-year Mission Year volunteers in the city.
