The Organization of the Health Care System (3 credits)
This course is intended to be a review of the healthcare system, including the history and implementation of managed care.  Emphasis is on the general, as well as the departmental, operations of health care organizations.  Factors affecting health status, the current state of health care, and the future of the health care system are discussed.
BUSA  699 Essentials of Managed Care: A Research Approach (3 credits)
Using a managed care case study approach, this class is an introduction to critical research tools including currentmethods, instrument design, measurement criteria, and quantitative analysis used to guide managementdecisions in an ever-changing marketplace.

This course introduces students to key topics in strategic management and marketing, focusing on the need to cultivate creative thinking, social responsibility and entrepreneurial vision.

Health Care Economics (3 credits)
Using the case study method, students examine and analyze real-life examples of issues facing the healthcare manager in the healthcare setting. The process of evaluation includes both economic and ethical analysis.

The applications of legal approaches to healthcare decision making are studied. Discussion focuses on predominant relationships in the healthcare field: physician-patient, hospital-physician, and hospital-employee.

Human Resource Management (3 credits)
Designed to explore and analyze the wide varieties of activities involved in executing the personnel function of an organization, this course explores the nature of responsibilities relating to the management of people.  Also provided in this course is a survey of contemporary management theories and practices in the areas of leadership, shared values, motivation, and team building.

Managerial Accounting for Health Care Institutions (3 credits)
This course provides an introduction to accounting methods used by healthcare organizations in the financial planning and control process, including cost accounting, cost analysis, budget process, and management of working capital.

The student is provided with an understanding of marketing management
which managers of healthcare organizations can use to successfully organize, plan, and implement the marketing activities of their organizations. The marketing tools and techniques studied have practical, "real world" applications.

Using the case study method, the student analyzes real-life examples of issues facing the financial manager in the healthcare setting. The course provides the student with the terminology, theory, concepts, and tools for planning, acquiring, and utilizing information that can maximize organizational efficiency and value.

The student is provided with an understanding of health policy planning, analysis, and management. The course focuses on data resources and requirements, analysis and choices among health policy initiatives, comparative assessments of health policy, public and quasi-public sector decision making, resource allocation planning, and the major tactical, strategic problems faced by healthcare administrators in applying modern business concepts to healthcare systems.

This course explores the ethical "gray" areas of contemporary business practices and develops skills in moral discernment through a dialogical framework for ethical decision making that highlights the impact of a student's core values, experiences, and assumptions on the decision- making process.

Field Research Project and Thesis (3 credits)
This learning project allows the healthcare student to creatively meet their own objectives while using informationlearned in the classroom. It encompasses the development of a comprehensive healthcare project in theform of a written business plan, focusing on the identification, exploration, and feasibility of starting a new business,incorporating an entrepreneurial focus and centering on collaborative cohort efforts. This project is carriedout over the course of the entire program and includes two Executive Seminars that focus on contemporary practices, management problems, day-to-day management issues, and information technology.
