Arts in Transformation

Course Format

Time to Completion

The MA in Urban Studies is designed for students to pursue independent study combined with collaborative research in their chosen area of urban study within a global context. The program functions with year round continuous study and most candidates take 24 months of registered active study to complete the program. To accommodate students who work full time, courses are offered in a variety of formats, including weekend classes and distance (on-line and modified on-line) education.

Urban Studies Core plus Concentration

The program consists of a required set of cross-disciplinary Core Courses and Seminars that reflect a faith-based, cross-cultural, urban and applied research focus. In addition to this Core, students who are selected to participate in the program consult with their faculty advisor to choose their disciplinary program of study from one of the three concentrations: Arts in Transformation; Community Development or Youth Leadership.

All students in the program take a set of Core Courses (One Credit and Three Credit). This design allows students to more fully integrate the subject matter from courses within their degree program. These Core Courses provide students with the opportunity to form cross-sectional teams with students and faculty from other specialization tracks and degree programs. These teams collectively work on projects to research, share information and resources, create an integrated knowledge base across the curriculum, and develop multi-faceted solutions to specific problems in urban areas.

Residency Format

Core courses are offered in residential formats. Some will be made available on-line. Fall and Spring residencies are required of all students. No exceptions for absences are accepted for these residencies.
