What is the purpose of the Urban Studies program?
To train leaders as change agents in urban communities.

• Youth Leadership: to produce professionals who are academically, theologically, and culturally competent to serve youth in an urban context.
• Community Development: To produce professionals who are competent to work with communities to revitalize their physical, economic and social infrastructure.
• Arts in Transformation: to prepare artist practitioners to become effective leaders committed to transforming urban communities.

What career paths would I have with this degree?
• Youth Leadership: social services, urban youth ministry, community organizer, program director, activist, researcher. You will be equipped with tools for staring innovative models and programs.
• Community Development: Students are prepared to work in a variety of fields addressing the complex needs of neighborhoods and may work through community-based organizations, non-profit organizations, governmental and non-governmental agencies, social service agencies, or foundations.
• Arts in Transformation: Students are prepared to implement a strategies for utilizing the arts in community service and mission; initiate a new arts-integrated community program within a church or community organization; supervise artists as teachers and community workers; develop curricula for specific learning goals, implement a funding development plan; manage arts-integrated projects including financial and personnel oversight, and program evaluation.
Do I have to relocate to complete this degree?
No, we have students all over the country and the world who are able to complete this program. Students come to Philadelphia for residencies two times a year in the Community Development and Youth Leadership concentrations and three times a year for the Arts in Transformation concentration.
When are the upcoming residencies?
Summer 2009: Just Arts in Transformation Concentration students - June 3rd - 10th
Fall 2009: All concentrations - Sept. 25th - Oct. 3rd
Spring 2010: All concentrations - Feb. 12th - 20th
Can I complete this degree while having a full time job?
Yes! Classes offered in an accelerated format, intensives, and online learning. Some offered in traditional format.
What is the format of the classes?
The program is offered in a modified distance-learning format. That means it’s delivered in a hybrid of online and on the ground classes. In the Community Development and Youth Leadership concentrations students have two residencies per year—one in the fall and one in the spring. These residencies last 7-10 days. The Arts in Transformation Concentration has three residencies with one added in the summer time. Classes for the residencies are on the ground in Philadelphia. Prior to and after the residencies you will participate in an online classroom for discussions, videos, etc. There are sometimes teleconferences as well. For those who live locally there is also at least one course per semester in a traditional, weekly, on the ground format that is typically scheduled one night a week in the evening.
How much will the program cost?
Tuition for ’09-’10 is $570 credit. Scholarships available!
How long does it take to complete the program?
2 years (full time) or 3 years (part time).
