- Dr. Cary teaches the year-long Western Civilization seminar taken by all first year students of the Templeton Honors College. The seminar focuses on intensive (rather than extensive) reading of writings that have formed the Western tradition, including those by Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Dante, Shakespeare, Descartes, Austen, Nietzsche and Flannery O'Connor. Dr. Cary is a philosopher and theologian known for his taped lecture series, Augustine: Philosopher and Saint, and Philosophy and Religion in the West, published by The Teaching Company. His book, Augustine's Invention of the Inner Self, has been published by Oxford University Press. He is currently working on another book about Augustine tentatively titled, Signs and Inwardness.
