Stephen Welsh

Visiting Professor of Dance

Stephen Welsh, originally from NC, has been dancing and choreographing professionally in NYC and Philly for decades. After receiving his MFA from Temple U., he danced with Anna Sokolow, Jeanne Ruddy, Dance Fusion, TRAPEZIUS Aerial Dance and in the works of Doug Varone, Moses Pendleton, Murray Louis, Jane Comfort, Jose Limon and Kun- Yang Lin. His choreography has received numerous grants including a Rockefeller Foundation Grant, a PCA Grant, a Five-County Cultural Arts Grant and a Pew Foundation-funded audience development project. He regularly presents work at the American College Dance Festival. This past July he performed in the work of 2013 Guggenheim award-winning choreographer, Claire Porter on a shared bill with Bill Evans in Brockport, NY.

As a board member of Indigenous Pitch, he helps write grants to fund their extensive dance outreach programs for at-risk youth. He teaches technique/composition/dance history/repertory/improvisation and arts integration at Eastern University where he is a full time visiting faculty member.

Other teaching credits include: Swarthmore College, University of the Arts, Bryn Mawr College, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Community College of Philadelphia, Montgomery County Community College, Girls High, Episcopal Academy, Agnes Irwin, Barry School on Eastern’s Campus and First Position Movement Arts Center, Ardmore.
