FIRST U.S. CLASS START FOR SLD ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Our School of Leadership & Development (SLD) is pleased to announce the start of its first U.S. based Organizational Leadership Program. The class has been conducted overseas in Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America for several years in partnership with World Vision and Habitat for Humanity. The first U.S. cohort starts April 4. To mark the historic event, SLD hosted a small banquet.  Dr. Sharon Gramby Sobukwe is program chair and Mike Sheridan is the program coordinator.  Congratulations!

OLD ELECTRONICS WANTED FOR MISSIONS FUNDRAISER APRIL 4

The Philippines 2008 mission team is collecting old and used cell phones, ink jet printer cartridges, DVD movies and videogames, portable DVD players, laptop computers, MP3 players, x-boxes, Sony Playstations, Wii, digital cameras and digital video cameras, digital picture frames, and portable navigation and GPS devices.  Everything we collect will be sent out April 4.  If you have any questions or something to donate, contact Rachel Keller at rkeller@eastern.edu.  We appreciate your support!

RECYCLING ON CAMPUSRecycle

Eastern University has two main types of recycling on the St. Davids campus:

  1. Commingles: all aluminum, glass, and #1 and #2 plastics.
  2. Paper/Cardboard: all clean paper products and cardboard that have not been touched by food. Paper products can be any color, magazines, junk mail, newspaper, and envelopes.   These items can have staples, small amounts of tape, glue or other packing materials.

Thanks for recycling and being good stewards of our beautiful campus environment!

PALESTINIAN ART DISPLAY AT LIBRARY THROUGH APRIL 25

Come see photos taken by EU student Adam Beach of Arab Palestinians who live in either the occupied Palestinian territories or are citizens of Israel. Most of the persons pictured are refugees. Prints are for sale. Adam Beach is an emerging photojournalist and student of Middle Eastern Studies and Cultural Anthropology. From May to July 2007 Adam traveled throughout the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Israel with EU students Megan Tahquette and Peder Wiegner photographing and filming various forms of nonviolent resistance against the Israeli occupation. Beach's photos will be part of a documentary film project set to be released in May, 2008. The film is called Handala and will be screened at film festivals and artistic venues on the East Coast and Midwest. NOMINATE BARNABAS SERVANT LEADERS BY APRIL 7

The Barnabas Servant Leadership Award, sponsored by the Barney II Foundation of River Forest, IL, is awarded annually to juniors who have demonstrated outstanding servant leadership on campus or in the community. This year we expect to make 2-4 awards; each winner will receive a monetary grant and the opportunity to donate to the EU volunteer organization of her/his choice. Last year’s award winners were Kevin Bennett, Edie Doane, Cliff Gehret and Peder Wiegner. To nominate a junior student for this award, e-mail YOUR name, the NOMINEE’s name, a description of the voluntary activity on campus, in the community or church on which you base your nomination, and a description of the servant leadership qualities possessed by the candidate and how she/he has affected the life of the campus, community or organization to Tess Bradley, Director, Career & Leadership Development (tbradley@eastern.edu.)   • Tuesday, April 8, Gough Great Room at 7PM. BAMAKO Directed By Abderrahmane Sissako.  A trial taking place in the courtyard of Bamako, Mali is pitting African civil society against the World Bank and the IMF.
  • Tuesday, April 15, Gough Great Room at 7PM. LE PLAFOND DE VERRE Directed By Yamina Benguigui.  A documentary about discrimination and challenges found in the workplace for immigrants and women.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOK COLLECTING CONTEST DEADLINE APRIL 4

FIRST PRIZE: $350
SECOND PRIZE: $200

Eastern University undergraduate students collect books and share their interests. Deadline for entries is April 4. Contest rules: Six to ten books may be entered per collection.  The collections will be judged on the basis of depth of personal interest, unity of purpose and potential value for future scholarship.  Include a one-page paper that lists your name and contact information, the titles of each book in your collection, a short description of each, and why you chose these books for your collection. JONATHAN ORR ESSAY CONTEST DEADLINE APRIL 4

FIRST PRIZE:  $500
SECOND PRIZE:  $350

Friends of the Library invite Eastern University students to enter. Submit an essay that will "Describe the effects of the Internet on Spiritual Life." We are looking for well-crafted essays; length must be at least 400 words and must not exceed 750 words; essays must be the original work of the applicant.  Plagiarism in any form will result in disqualification.  Please cite any and all resources. Submit all entries electronically to Jim Sauer at jsauer@eastern.edu. Entries must include the writer’s name, year, major and contact information. Winners will be contacted by phone or email. Awards will be presented at the annual Friends of the Library Dinner at Eastern University on April 25.

The Delaware County Symphony welcomes musicians to audition for its 2008-2009 season. The symphony presents four chamber concerts and four symphony concerts each season. DELAWARE COUNTY SYMPHONY CONCERT APRIL 6Symphony

The Delaware County Symphony, under the direction of Roman Pawlowski, will present the fourth of its Chamber Music Series on Sunday, April 6, at 3PM in the Meagher Theatre of the Thomas A. Bruder, Jr. Life Center at Neumann College, Aston, PA. Tickets are $10, Seniors/Students $8, and children 12 and under are free with paying adult. This concert includes the String Quartet in C, op.20, no. 2 by Joseph Hayden, Sonata for Violin and Cello by Maurice Ravel, and the String Quartet in B-flat , op. 67 by Johannes Brahms. Program commentary will be by Roman Pawlowski, and seating will be on Stage. The next full DCS Symphony concert will be on Sunday, May 4, at 3PM. MISSIONS TRIPS FOR 2008-2009

Philippines, May 11-27, 2008: Our arts-focused team will minister for two weeks among the very poor in urban and rural areas, working with a church that Prof. Bush pioneered 20 years ago.

Bolivia, May 12-27, 2008: Our team of 11 will return to Cochabamba to work with MAP, a comprehensive health agency.

Missions Forum, Oct. 22-24, 2008: Missions organizations and activities on campus, sponsored by Student Missions Fellowship (SMF).

New Orleans, Jan. 2-11, 2009: A team will do Hurricane Katrina relief and construction along the gulf coast with a local church and Habitat. Applications now available and are due Apr. 9.

Haiti, Jan. 3-11, 2009: A team of 9 will partner with Beyond Borders for a Transformational Travel trip. Applications now available and are due Apr. 9.
