FALL CONVOCATION AUG. 29
This Friday, August 29 at 10 a.m. in the Gym, we will come together as a University community to ask God's blessing upon us as we gather to commence the work of the traditional academic year. This year's Fall Convocation will be a really special one - new students, faculty, staff and administration will be welcomed into the Eastern family, honor students will be recognized, and we will celebrate the installation of Eastern's first Chancellor, Dr. Christopher Hall.
EU ALUMNI-EMPLOYEE LUNCH SEPT. 25
Eastern University Alumni-Employee Appreciation Luncheon will be held on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Eagle Hall Great Room (new location this year). ORLANDO COSTAS LECTURE AT SEMINARY OCT. 4
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Professor of Social Ethics Dr. Eldin Villafañe will deliver the 2008 Orlando E. Costas Lecture on Tuesday, October 4, at 11 a.m. at Palmer Seminary. Dr. Villafañe is widely recognized as being among the nation’s top Latino scholars. An awards luncheon (at about 1:15 p.m.) featuring Latino/a cuisine will follow the lecture. CLEAN THOSE TYPEWRITERS
A man from our typewriter repair service will be on the St. Davids campus the week of September 2 for the annual cleaning of our typewriters. He already has a list of the offices he needs to visit.
HOW TO USE AN EU VAN
Are you faculty, staff or a student and want to use an Eastern van this year? Please read carefully:
- To request an Eastern van, fill out the reservation form at http://www.eastern.edu/enet/VanReqForm.html. The request goes to Athletics first, and then to Service Learning if they cannot fill it. Each office handles the keys for their vans.
- You must have an Eastern van license to drive a van. All Eastern van licenses expire at the end of July and must be renewed before you can drive this year. To renew, please bring a copy of your current driver's license and your old Eastern van license to the Information desk in Walton 4. You do not have to take another driving test but will have to fill out two forms.
- First-time drivers must get a van driver application from their sponsoring department and schedule a van driver test with Security, usually on Thursdays or Fridays (X1711). You will need a copy of your current driver's license and will fill out three forms.
HOMECOMING AND FAMILY WEEKEND OCT. 8-11
Our Homecoming celebration, "Still Havin' Fun!" is October 11. A special Alumni Chapel will be held Wed., Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. in the Gym, and a Worship Service concludes the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. in McInnis Auditorium. Saturday is packed with fun events including tours, Fall Festival, soccer, Planetarium shows, lots of food, and much more. A Spring Capstone Course will include a trip to Italy which can be taken as part of the course or just as an educational, fun trip. Feb. 27-March 8. Eastern University will host the National Christian Multicultural Student Leaders Conference (NCMSLC), November 7-9, 2008. This year’s theme is “Faith In Action: Bridging the Multicultural Gap One Student at a Time.” NCMSLC is an annual student development conference that aims to provide participants with knowledge and skills to enhance their understanding of multicultural ideals, challenges and realities, and the role of the Christian student and Christian institution in the journey toward cultural competency. Citizen Advocacy of Chester County is looking for a volunteer advocate to befriend a 50-year-old man with special needs in Berwyn. A "motherly" woman is preferred in this case. Citizen Advocacy is a community-based nonprofit that matches volunteers to special needs persons in order to build relationships of friendship and advocacy, and provides support services to the advocates as needed. Missions Forum, Oct. 22-24, 2008: Missions organizations and activities on campus, sponsored by Student Missions Fellowship (SMF).
New Orleans, Jan. 2-11, 2009: A team will do Hurricane Katrina relief and construction along the Gulf Coast with a local church and Habitat.
Haiti, Jan. 3-11, 2009: A team of 9 will partner with Beyond Borders for a Transformational Travel trip.
Dominican Republic, Feb 28 - Mar. 8, 2009: Our team will continue Eastern’s work in El Fondo with Food for the Hungry and Goshen Baptist. Applications available in September.
Habitat for Humanity, Feb 28 - Mar. 8, 2009: Two teams will tackle low-cost home construction in the U.S. over spring break. Applications available in the fall.
