Paul Conway, Esq. (Phila.Defenders Assoc.), John Rush (Justice and Mercy, Inc.; New Person Center), and Deborah Stith, M.D. (Harvard School of Public Health) will frame the issue, share best practices and engage community leaders to identify solutions. Discussion will focus on two questions.  How have perceptions of urban youth impacted or been impacted by such things as violence, legislation, policing, judicial sentences, and media portrayals?  What are just and effective Christian responses to the injustices urban youth face?

Counseling Psychology @ Eastern University presents guest lecturer Nancy McWilliams speaking on “The Paranoid Personality” Nov. 19 from 6-9 p.m. in McInnis Auditorium, St. Davids. Attendance is free for psychologists, educators, students and counselors. Three continuing education credits may be given for a fee of $30. Nancy McWilliams is the author of several books and numerous articles on personality, psychoanalytic theories, psychopathology, and psychotherapy. ORLANDO COSTAS LECTURE AT SEMINARY OCT. 4

PalmerGordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Professor of Social Ethics Dr. Eldin Villafañe will deliver the 2008 Orlando E. Costas Lecture on Tuesday, October 4, at 11 a.m. at Palmer Seminary. Dr. Villafañe is widely recognized as being among the nation’s top Latino scholars. An awards luncheon (at about 1:15 p.m.) featuring Latino/a cuisine will follow the lecture. BREEZEWAY OPEN DURING RENOVATION

Construction to expand the Breezeway's dining room on the St. Davids campus will continue through most of the semester. However, the Breezeway will be open during the construction. Our Homecoming celebration, "Still Havin' Fun!" is October 11. PLANNING TO STUDY OFF CAMPUS?

All Arts and Sciences students who plan to spend a semester abroad or at a U.S.-based program must first submit an Eastern University Study Abroad/Away Clearance. Students will not be permitted to apply financial aid to any program unless they have an approved clearance on file.  Deadlines are October 15 for spring semester and March 15 for fall semester.  Please contact Lori Bristol (X5010, lbristol@eastern.edu) in the Registrar's Office with questions or to pick up clearance packets.

WRITING CENTER OPEN

Writing CenterThe Writing and Tutoring Centers at St. Davids is open. The Writing Center will be open for appointments and walk-ins for students in the College of Arts and Sciences from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday; and 6-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday.  Tutoring is available by appointment only.  Questions?  Contact John Nordlof (X1453) about the Writing Center and Thelma Gray (X5836) about the Tutoring Center.

IS YOUR HEALTH RECORD COMPLETE?

All students in the College of Arts and Sciences with incomplete health records have had an academic hold placed on their record. PLEASE CHECK YOUR RECORD. This hold will freeze your grades and make it impossible to register for next semester's classes.  To have the hold released, contact the Student Health Center at X5955.

General hours for the Student Health Center are Monday-Thursday 9a.m.-12noon, 1p.m.-6 p.m.; and Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m.  No appointment necessary.

Doctor's hours are Monday-10 a.m.-12 noon, Tuesday 1-3 p.m., Wednesday 5-6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m.-12 noon.  Appointments appreciated.  Walk-ins welcome.

DELAWARE CO. SYMPHONY SEPT. 28 AND OCT. 19

The Delaware County Symphony will present the first concert of its Chamber Concert Series for the 2008-2009 season on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 3 p.m. in the Meagher Theatre at Neumann College, Aston, PA. MISSIONS TRIPS FOR 2008-2009

Missions Forum, Oct. 22-24, 2008: Missions organizations and activities on campus, sponsored by Student Missions Fellowship (SMF).

New Orleans, Jan. 2-11, 2009: A team will do Hurricane Katrina relief and construction along the Gulf  Coast with a local church and Habitat.

Haiti, Jan. 3-11, 2009: A team of 9 will partner with Beyond Borders for a Transformational Travel trip.

Dominican Republic, Feb 28 - Mar. 8, 2009: Our team will continue Eastern’s work in El Fondo with Food for the Hungry and Goshen Baptist. Applications available in September.

Habitat for Humanity, Feb 28 - Mar. 8, 2009: Two teams will tackle low-cost home construction in the U.S. over spring break. Applications available in the fall.
