EASTERN THEATRE SEPT. 25-28
Eastern University Theatre presents Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, the tale of two battered souls, Danny and Roberta, who find each other on the verge of self-destruction, yet somehow lift each other into a transformative, healing relationship. Sept. 25-27 at 8PM and Sept. 28 at 3PM in McInnis Auditorium, St. Davids. Written by Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning author John Patrick Shanley and directed by Eastern's own Liz Carlson '06, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea has been called "a Bronx variation on Beauty and the Beast" and "Romeo and Juliet in Reverse." Tickets are only $5 with EU ID! Tickets are $8 for seniors and $10 for general admission. Seating is very limited. This production is not intended for younger audiences. MAKING SENSE OF OUR ECONOMIC CRISIS OCT. 1
On October 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Baird Library, St. Davids, Dr. Gilbert Heebner, with a PhD in applied economics from U Penn and extensive experience in finance, including serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Economist at Corestates Bank (now Wachovia), has agreed to enlighten us as to what in the world is happening to our financial institutions and what might signify the light at the end of the tunnel. Dr. Heebner taught for many years in Eastern's business programs. His wisdom and Christian charity are legendary. You won't want to miss this.

This year Eastern has its largest cross country team competing in the Gywnedd Mercy Invitational at Militia Hill State Park the morning of Oct. 11.

Eastern's dance professor Dr. Joselli Deans is one of the alumni choreographers in this dance presentation at Temple's Conwell Dance Theater in Phila. Joselli's dance "Seeking Routes" will be performed in the Dance Alumni Showcase concert. Performances are Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 4 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and will feature several Eastern University dancers. Tickets are $20 general admission and $15 students and seniors. The Metanexus Lecture Series, co-sponsored by the Templeton Honors College, presents Dr. Hauerwas, professor of theological ethics at Duke University Divinity School, who will talk about the dignity of difference. Astronaut, the latest immersive planetarium show created by the National Space Centre, takes you from Earth into space... and beyond. Eastern University presents The Criminalization of Urban Youth: a Juvenile Justice Issue on Sept. 26 at 10th and Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia, PA. This program brings together faith-based organizations, community leaders, social service providers, those involved in the judicial system, and urban youth. Paul Conway, Esq. (Phila.Defenders Assoc.), John Rush (Justice and Mercy, Inc.; New Person Center), and Deborah Stith, M.D. (Harvard School of Public Health) will frame the issue, share best practices and engage community leaders to identify solutions. Discussion will focus on two questions. How have perceptions of urban youth impacted or been impacted by such things as violence, legislation, policing, judicial sentences, and media portrayals? What are just and effective Christian responses to the injustices urban youth face?

Counseling Psychology @ Eastern University presents guest lecturer Nancy McWilliams speaking on “The Paranoid Personality” Nov. 19 from 6-9 p.m. in McInnis Auditorium, St. Davids. Dr. Pablo R. Diaz, Vice President of Ministries for Guideposts and a contributing writer for the annual Daily Guideposts devotional, will deliver the 2008 Orlando E. Costas Lecture on Tuesday, October 4, at 11 a.m. at Palmer Seminary. Dr. Diaz grew up in a New York City public housing development, overcoming poverty, peer pressure, and many personal obstacles. DANCE AUDITIONS FOR FALL CONCERT SEPT. 26
Friday, Sept. 26, from 4-6:50 p.m. (10-minute slots for each dance). At the Dance Studio in the Gym. All types of dance can audition. MAJOR AND MINOR DANCE PROGRAM AUDITIONS OCT. 13
Monday, Oct. 13 from 1:30-4:00 p.m. at the Dance Studio in the Gym. The audition is a full class audition and interview for those auditioning for the dance major. Dance minors also take this class for leveling purposes. The class will include modern dance, ballet, and at least one major jazz combination. Please bring appropriate dance shoes and no tights or socks, only bare feet will be allowed for modern. Please wear dance clothing so your body can be seen. Profugo, a nonprofit, will host Sweat for Hope at 9 a.m. on October 25 at Ridley Creek State Park. People of all ages and abilities are welcome. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in 6 different age categories. All participants 60 and over will be awarded prizes. The entry fee is $25, which will be waived for participants with $100 in pledges. All money raised will support Profugo's sustainable development programs. New Orleans, Jan. 2-11, 2009: A team will do Hurricane Katrina relief and construction along the Gulf Coast with a local church and Habitat.
Haiti, Jan. 3-11, 2009: A team of 9 will partner with Beyond Borders for a Transformational Travel trip.
Dominican Republic, Feb 28 - Mar. 8, 2009: Our team will continue Eastern’s work in El Fondo with Food for the Hungry and Goshen Baptist. Applications available in September.
Habitat for Humanity, Feb 28 - Mar. 8, 2009: Two teams will tackle low-cost home construction in the U.S. over spring break. Applications available in the fall.
