BE INSPIRED!
Kevin Maness '92, associate professor of communication studies, writes: A few years back, I was going through kind of a difficult time in my life--I felt very depressed, overwhelmed, hopeless. I was living in New York City and attending 15th Street Friends Meeting in Manhattan. After nearly 45 minutes of silent worship, almost unbroken, one member arose and simply said "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well." And I just started crying, like all the worry and doubt was flooding out of me. There's no doubt in my mind that God spoke to me through an unknown Quaker Friend that day. Now, on my office wall, I've posted the whole quote, which comes from the mystic writer Julian of Norwich:
“And thus, in my folly, afore this time often I wondered why, by the great foreseeing wisdom of God, the beginning of sin was not letted [prevented]; for then, me thought, all should have been well. But Jesus, who in this Vision informed me of all that is needful to me, answered by this word and said, 'Sin is behovable [inevitable], but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.”
This is no Pollyanna optimism, for it acknowledges the existence and the inevitability of evil. I guess it could be dismissed as a "pie in the sky" promise of good to come in the afterlife. But I prefer to read it as a testament of powerful hope that embraces the entire world--good and evil--mindful of the Sin that pervades all our human works, but ever conscious of the good that God has worked and is working in our lives at the same time.
