Eagles Scare Wolverines, but fall late
In the first meeting of the year between the Eastern University Women's
basketball team and their counterparts from Wesley, the Eagles played the
Wolverines to a close game, but watched their visitors pull away in the second
half. In the return game in Dover Saturday, the Eagles played two halves of
solid basketball, but fell as the hosts scored the last five points of the
game to erase a three point Eastern lead in the last minute.
A strong second half performance from first year forwards Jeriah Garton and
Hannah Tobin put the Eagles in position to win late. Garton finished with a game
high 18 points and Tobin added 17 with ten boards.
After a nip and tuck second half, first year guard Emily Reeser hit her only
basket of the game with a three pointer from the left wing to tie the game at
56. The hosts responded with a three pointer from Colleen Thomas, but the Eagles
found Jacey Bray on the wing for her third three pointer of the game to tie the
game at 59 with just under five and a half minutes to play.
Brittany Lundy scored a pair of field goals around a short baseline jumper
from Tobin to put the Wolverines up a pair late. Eastern's Raya Shores responded
with a three pointer under pressure to put the Eagles up one with 1:35 to play.
After a Wesley turnover, Mandy Kuiken found Tobin underneath for a bucket and
the Eagles led 66-63 with just a few ticks more than a minute to play. Thomas
scored a basket with 49 seconds to play, and immediately after an Eastern
turnover swung the game with another jumper.
The Eagles return to action Monday night with a 6:00 pm game at Gwynedd-Mercy
College.
