Turnovers stall Eagle attack in loss to PSU-Delco
ST. DAVIDS, Pa. — The Eastern University women's basketball team hit
their first three pointer of the game and forged a 9-3 lead early, but were
unable to take care of the ball in a 62-47 home loss to Penn State Delaware
County. The Eagles turned the ball over 25 times and shot just two of 14 from
behind the arc in the loss.
The visiting Lions, led by 18 points from guard Dana Johnson and 17 points
and eight rebounds from Deana Gineitis as the Lions picked up 17 steals and 15
offensive rebounds to overcome a mediocre 34% shooting effort. The Lions
converted 19 of 27 foul shots to build a double figure lead in the waning
minutes of the first half and to foil any Eastern chances at a comeback.
The Eagles opened up their biggest lead of the game four minutes in when
Kuiken hit Raya Shores for a layup to build a 9-3 advantage. Delco's Cara
Zibelman scored seven of her 14 points in a three minute stretch to swing the
game in the Lions direction for good. Johnson and Sam Mathews added baskets to
complete the 11-0 run.
Eatern's Hannah Tobin, who finished with a game high 13 rebounds, ended the
run with a short jumper off a Kuiken assist. Shores scored another inside bucket
before the visitors closed the half on an 18-6 run.
Down 31-19 at the break, the Eagles scored two straight baskets out of the
break on assists from Shores. The senior captain found fellow senior Jacey Bray
slashing to the basket and first year guard Emily Reeser for a baseline jumper.
The Eagles, however, were not able to get the deficit inside six for the entire
second half.
The Eagles return to action Thursday night with a 6:00 pm game at PAC South
foe Neumann College.
