Living in Community at Eastern

As an entering student at Eastern, we want to welcome you and answer some questions you may have concerning the Residence Halls.

Living in a Community

Living with other students is an exciting and challenging experience. Not only tolerance but also understanding of people from very diverse backgrounds can be enriching and growth producing. Finding out that all Christians don't think and behave in the same ways can be enlightening. Personal growth that occurs within a community living situation leads to a more successful and adjusted adult life.

Community Expectations

Policies at Eastern reflect the goals and commitments of the University. The rules are minimal but are taken seriously. Enrolled students are expected to know and abide by all policies of the University. Some of these regulations are listed below.

  1. Eastern's campus and University-sponsored events are completely alcohol and drug free.
  2. Residence Hall visitation by opposite sex friends is limited to a specific schedule:
    Monday and Tuesday
    Wednesday
    Thursday
    Friday and Saturday
    Sunday
    4:30 pm - 10:30 pm
    NO VISITATION
    4:30 pm - 10:30 pm
    1:00 pm - 1:00 am
    1:00 pm - 10:30 pm
  3. The entire campus is smoke-free both inside and outside the buildings. All other official policies and procedures related to Resident Life and University Housing can be found in Eastern's Student Handbook

Housing Assignments

Building a sense of community that is characterized by Christian love and values is an important goal for housing at Eastern. The Department of Resident Services makes all room assignments. After these assignments are made, room changes are not permitted until the end of the first six weeks of the semester. The Coordinator of Housing must give approval for the move. Learning how to live harmoniously with others encourages the development of acceptance, communication skills, and confrontational skills.

Residence Directors

Each housing unit has a live-in professional staff member who is available for consultation, counseling, and discussion. Resident Directors (RD's) are available in the evening hours for emergency student-related needs. RD's work closely with the Residence Life Staff.

Residence Life Staff

Each floor of students (between 14 and 40 residents) has a Resident Assistant (RA) who lives in a central location on the floor. RA's at Eastern are concerned with each individual's adjustment to and success in college. They are supportive, mature students who are trained in para-professional counseling skills, crisis intervention, and community building.

When campus expectations are not met or rules are violated, the RA will often be the first person to confront the student. However, the primary goal of the RA is to establish a harmonious living situation on the floor that fits the goals and expectations of the University.
