Position: Network and Systems Assistant Administrator

The Network and Systems Assistant, reporting to the Director of Network and Information Technology Systems, implements and manages the primary enterprise-wide UNIX and NT (Windows 2000) servers, infrastructure including LAN, WAN, Internet and Intranet connectivity, network addressing, proxy services, remote connectivity and virtual private networking and network and system security.  This individual assists the Director in planning for system and network growth and assists in researching emerging technologies. This individual provides some user support and assists with other information technology projects as required.

Position Responsibilities

The tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Enterprise Servers

-Monitors the computers to insure availability for users
-Monitors the system resources (memory, disk utilization, CPU utilization) and assists the Director in planning for system growth and/or replacement 
-Installs operating system patches and upgrades as needed
-Analyzes problems and effects a solution in conjunction with Hewlett-Packard and other vendors for system hardware or operating system problems
-Coordinates the installation of all new enterprise servers
-Installs Linux or FreeBSD servers for other enterprise applications like student web pages and proxy services
-Performs nightly and weekly backups of enterprise systems and insures that the tapes are included in the off-site storage pickup
-Responds to user questions regarding client configuration for proxy services

• Infrastructure
-Maintains the infrastructure hardware and software
-Installs and configures new network equipment including routers, hubs and switches and network appliances such as firewalls, bandwidth allocation devices and virtual private networks
-Manages WANs (wide area networks) and the campus LAN to insure connectivity for users including switches, hubs, and routers
-Installs, upgrades and manages web servers as needed and manages the availability of web services
-Maintains the Internet connection and DNS (domain name services)
-Monitors and adjusts the configuration on the bandwidth allocation device as needed
-Maintains the campus network addressing and DHCP
-Updates the network site map
-Maintains remote connectivity including dial-in and virtual private networking
-Works with users to resolve configuration issues for remote connectivity
-In conjunction with the Director, plans, designs and implements structural upgrades to the network
-Researches new equipment and services and makes recommendations to the Director
-Assists the Director in researching emerging technologies

• Security
-Maintains the campus firewall and monitors for evidence of attempted break-ins
-Maintains the virtual private network and user profiles 
-Secures the servers with a variety of security tools including ssh and TCP wrappers and shuts down unneeded service ports
-Implements SSL and installs digital certificates for services requiring encryption across the campus or Internet like web advising and student information services
-Researches new security tools and products and makes recommendations to the Director

• Other Technical Responsibilities
-Assists in supporting enterprise-wide services including messaging and directory services (email and LDAP) and web servers
-Manages the radius server and authentication requiring radius to LDAP pass through
-Works with the trouble-ticket system
-Maintains the university mailing lists 
-Coordinates requests for additional cabling (twisted pair or fiber)
-Responds to helpdesk questions related to connectivity and provides general problem solving
-Participates in other information technology projects as needed

Status:  Staff, full-time regular, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year

A Bachelor’s degree with a major in computer science, information science or three years professional experience is strongly preferred.  Experience in UNIX (HP-UX preferred) and NT (Windows 2000 server) system administration, network administration in a UNIX/NT environment and web server administration is required.  Experience with network security, network addressing, configuration of routers (Cisco preferred) including access control lists, switches and dial-in access required.  Experience with directory and messaging services, Front Page extensions, radius and DHCP strongly preferred.  A versatile individual with the ability to learn and implement new applications is required.  Strong problem solving and analytical skills with attention to detail are essential.  The ability to think logically and communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, with both technical personnel and other non-technical users and staff is essential.  Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or in teams are essential. Knowledge of UNIX shell scripting, SQL, JavaScript, PERL/CGI scripts, and PHP experience is strongly preferred. Knowledge of IMAP, POP3 and LDAP is preferred.

Position requirements:  

This position is a combination of an office-based position working with a computer or laptop and hands-on work with hardware in a data center and in all wiring closets on the main campus and other campus locations.  Wiring closets are located in basements, attics and locations with limited accessibility.  Evening and weekend work is occasionally required to solve specific problems, upgrade services or meet specific deadlines.  Remote monitoring is also required during specified periods. A valid, current driver’s license and car is needed to travel to other campus locations on an as needed basis.
