PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Director of the Annual Fund is responsible for the planning and execution of a comprehensive Annual Giving program designed to continue to build operating support for the university. The Director manages the College of Arts & Sciences annual fundraising programs, utilizing the telephone, direct mail, Internet and personal solicitations, to increase both annual gift income, and the number of alumni who participate. The Director manages and coordinates membership in the College’s giving societies, including all stewardship activities. The work involves a high level of contact with individuals inside and outside the university and therefore requires advanced interpersonal and communication skills. The variety of duties implies the need for good time management, the ability to prioritize and excellent record keeping abilities. Access to sensitive materials assumes a high degree of confidentiality. Some evening work and travel will be required.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Job Functions
• Works with other Development staff, administration, deans, trustees and alumni to identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit targeted annual fund donors and prospects;
• Coordinates all annual-giving solicitations for university constituencies to maximize giving and participation rates;
• Develops annual giving strategic and operations plans. Based on those plans, proposes yearly budget recommendations for the annual giving program. Administers the budget to assure sound fiscal expenditures and management;
• Oversees and further develops the university’s gift society program, including the planning of all marketing efforts, managing of stewardship activities, and monitoring of membership;
• Implements direct mail and telemarketing strategies for targeted groups;
• Responsible for design/message and creation of all annual giving printed and verbal script materials;
• Implements a faculty/staff solicitation program, including the development of a volunteer structure within the university to promote increased participation by this constituency;
• Works closely with the Director of Alumni Relations to increase the percentage of donors who take advantage of corporate matching gift programs;
• Collaborates with other Development employees to ensure timely and appropriate stewardship of targeted donors;
• Maintains prospect tracking records and reports accurately and efficiently;
• Makes recommendations for movement of assigned donors to major gift tracking;
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of university programs and priorities and its administrative and financial organization;
Additional Job Functions:
• Represents the development office at university events and alumni functions;
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Development;
• Safeguards the confidentiality of departmental or office administration by exercising discretion in communicating information to faculty, students and staff, and handling of all departmental requests.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• A bachelor’s degree plus 1-3 years of related work experience is required.
• Minimum of three years of related work experience in a development office or non-profit environment.
• Experience in fundraising and donor relations at an institution of higher education or other substantial non-profit organization;
• Demonstrated skills in gift solicitation;
• Strong organizational and communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
• Demonstrated commitment to teamwork and the ability to motivate prospective donors;
• Ability to be an articulate spokesperson on behalf of the university; and
• Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with a diverse constituency.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience with Raisers Edge or other fundraising software program.
