Teacher Course Evaluations

Eastern University believes that course and faculty improvement come from many sources. One source can be the regular evaluation of courses and faculty by students. Students who thoughtfully answer the questions on these evaluations can help the faculty to improve courses and instruction, while providing the administration with input for decisions concerning faculty development, retention, promotion and tenure.

Each semester, instructors and department chairs select the courses that will be evaluated.  Consult the table found at the appropriate link below to see if your course(s) is/are being evaluated, and by which method/form.  Web addresses for respective forms are available at the top of the document.

Semester-Based Courses

Members of the Faculty may choose to evaluate at least two courses per semester.  Affiliate and Adjunct Faculty are evaluated upon request of their department chair.  Once a course is selected for evaluation, the form used (Narrative Form or ETS SIR II) is determined based on the number of registered students, with the following exceptions:

• Any course with three or less students is not evaluated.
• Private Lessons are not evaluated.
• Teaching Assistants are not evaluated.
• An instructor may request that the Narrative Form be used instead of the Online SIR II form if he/she feels it is more appropriate for the class.

OCE (Narrative Form)

Smaller classes with four to nine registered students are eligible to use the Narrative Form, which consists of four open-ended questions.  Online Course Evaluations (OCE) provides students with electronic access to the form and compiles the results. 

The Narrative Form asks the following questions:

1. What did you find most helpful or of value about this course?
2. How, if at all, did the instructor relate course material to the Christian faith?
3. Comment on the interaction between the professor and the students in and out of class throughout the semester.
4. If you could, what would you change about this course?

Faculty and department chairs can access the results of the Narrative Form via the Online Course Evaluation system after the close of the evaluation period.

ETS (Online SIR II Form)

A course with ten or more registered students is eligible to use the Educational Testing System (ETS) Online SIR II form. This form contains 45 standardized multiple-choice questions with a section for student comments at the end.

ETS provides students with access to the evaluation forms and provides faculty and department chairs with quantitative analysis of the results.  Results can be compared online to national norms.  More information, including comparative data tables, is available on the ETS website.  

Term-Based Courses

Term-based courses with 3 or more registered students are evaluated using the Online Course Evaluation (OCE) system.  Shortly before the course ends, OCE emails students through their Eastern email account to inform them that the evaluation period has begun and to provide a link to the evaluation website.  Students have two weeks to complete the evaluation.

Evaluation results are available to instructors and department chairs/program directors only after grades for the course have been officially submitted to the Registrar.
