Teacher Course Evaluations

Eastern University believes that course and faculty improvement comes from many sources. One source can be the regular evaluation of courses and faculty by students. Students who thoughtfully answer the questions on these evaluations can help the faculty to improve courses and instruction while providing the administration with input for decisions concerning faculty development, faculty retention, promotion and tenure.  These evaluations are very important as they are used by the Faculty Personnel Committee and the administration for important decisions about faculty and courses.

Semester-Based Courses

Any course with three or less students will NOT be evaluated. Any course with an enrollment of four to nine students is eligible to use the Narrative form, which consists of several open-ended questions.  The Narrative form will be provided to students electronically through the Online Course Evaluation system.

Any course with ten or more students is eligible to use the Educational Testing System SIR II form. Student comments are a part of the form we use. ETS, in Princeton, New Jersey, will provided students access to the forms for courses chosen by faculty and departments for evaluation and then will perform an analysis of the student responses, which can be compared online to national norms.

All Members of the Faculty may choose to evaluate at least two courses and all Affiliate and Adjunct Faculty will be evaluating courses chosen by the the department chair.

A copy of the Narrative Form can be viewed by clicking on the link below.  A copy of the ETS SIR II form may be viewed at the reference desk of the Warner Library on the Saint Davids campus or at any of the offices listed below.

  • St. Davids campus:  Warner Library
  • Philadelphia campus:  Office of Vangie Jackson
  • Esperanza College:  Office of the Dean

More information about the ETS form and results can be viewed by clicking on the ETS link below, clicking the Products tab at the top of the ETS Portal and scrolling down and clicking on the SIR II listing on the Products page.  Even though the forms cannot be viewed online, the ETS web site contains downloadable research on teaching and comparative data for the results.

Results of the ETS forms will be returned to the faculty and department chairs via email after the close of the evaluation period. Results of the Narrative forms will be available electronically to faculty and department chairs via the Online Course Evaluation system.  Details for access are available from the Office of Institutional Research.

Term-Based Courses

All term-based courses are evaluated using the Online Course Evaluation system.  Students will be contacted through Eastern e-mail shortly before the course is due to end and will be given a web address at which the evaluation may be completed.  Students will only be able to access the evaluation forms once per course and so should be sure to complete the form when first accessed.  Results will be made available to professors and administrators only after grades for the course have been officially submitted to the Registrar.
