How do I use WSFTP95 once configured to upload and download web pages to my UNIX account?

STEP 1.  Open WSFTP95

STEP 2.  You should see the connect window open.  If you do not, hit the connect button.

STEP 3.  Now in the "Host Name / Address" field, type in the address of the Web server you wish to connect to.
Type in"groups.eastern.edu" if you are uploading to Groups.  Then for the host type select "Unix (standard)" for Unix machines, or "autodetect" for anything.

Then type in your User ID and your Password to connect to the server and hit ok.  This should log you in.   Please note that WSFTP will time out after 10 minutes of inactivity on most servers.  If it times out, you must reconnect.  (do not use  your Novell network password here, only your UNIX passwords)

STEP 4.  Once you are connected, the screen is divided into two sides.  The left side is the local system (your computer) the right side is the remote system ( groups etc.)

To Upload your web pages to the remote server,

  1. First move to the proper directory on the remote server where you wish to place your pages. Do this by double clicking on a folder.  You may go the the parent directory of a folder by clicking on the green arrow.   (folders are listed first, files are listed after the folders, all in alphabetical order by name (unless you click the date button, in which case they would be listed by date)

  2. Select the file or files on the local system that you wish to upload  by clicking on them (to select more than 1 file at a time, hold down the control key.  (drives are listed at the bottom of the scroll box.   To change drives, scroll down to the bottom, select the appropriate drive, then browse through the directory structure for your chosen files.

  3. Once they are selected, hit the upload button and they will be copied into the directory you have chosen on the remote system (the one that appears in the remote system field).  If in the remote directory already had the same name as the file you are trying to upload, the remote file will be automatically overwritten with the new file.  Thus, it is a good idea to make a back up of files on the remote system (that would be overwritten) by clicking on the file in the remote system (right side)  then hitting the rename button on the right side, and changing it to "filename.html.030199" (the date as your extension).   This way you will have a backup copy of your original file before you overwrite it with the new one.

STEP 5. You may download files to your machine the same way.  Select the files on the remote system you wish to download, select the drive and directory on the local system where you wish to put them, and hit the download button.

******When uploading and downloading, keep in mind that Picture files must be transferred in binary format and html files must be transferred in ASCII format.  If WSFTP was configured properly just hit the auto button at the bottom, and you will have no worries.  This can be set as the default in the options / sessions (cont'd) tab.  to do this under Startup Transfer Mode, hit Auto Detect, then hit set as default, then ok.

Here is a checklist on how to use wsftp to modify a web page that already exists:

  1. Connect to the remote system.

  2. Select the file you wish to modify on the remote system and hit the download button

  3. Select this newly downloaded file on the local system and hit the left "view" button.  (this will bring up the this file in the notepad so you can make your changes)

  4. Change the appropriate text in the notepad, then go to file / save.

  5. Now upload the file back to the server by selecting it on the local system and hitting the upload arrow.  (first make a back up of the original file on the remote side by selecting it and hitting the right most rename button)

  6. Now your changes have been made and uploaded to the server.
