  • Nature Out of Place : Biological Invasions in the Global Age
by Jason Van Driesche and Roy Van Driesche
    QH353 .V36 2000
The general public is just beginning to be aware of the threat caused by biological invasions, in which foreign plants or animals overrun and destroy native ecosystems. A concern of ecologists, this topic has been covered recently in several books, including Robert Devine's Alien Invasion (LJ 6/15/98), Chris Bright's Life Out of Bounds: Bioinvasion in a Borderless World (LJ 12/98), and Alexandre Meinesz's Killer Algae (LJ 11/1/99). This latest offering from the Van Driesches, father and son biologists, alternates between Jason's conversations with people battling such problems as feral pigs in Hawaii and opportunistic zebra mussels in Ohio's rivers and Roy's scientific description of a given problem as a whole. These two parts do not always work together harmoniously, and the scientific descriptions may be too detailed for readers without a scientific background. Unlike Killer Algae, which focuses on one invader, but similar to Alien Invasion and the especially well-written Life Out of Bounds in its presentation of a broad survey of bioinvasions worldwide, this work is strongest in its extensive use of photographs, not found in the other titles, and the excellent recommendations for community and personal involvement. Recommended for all academic science collections and public libraries that have ecology collections.--Marianne Stowell Bracke, Univ. of Houston Libs. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
  • Materials Science and Technology: Challenges for the Chemical Sciences in the 21st Century
    TA401.3 .M383 2003 EB
The report assesses the current state of chemistry and chemical engineering at the interface with materials science and identifies challenges for research. Recent advances are blurring the distinction between chemistry and materials science and are enabling the creation of new materials that, to date, have only been predicted by theory. These advances include a greater ability to construct materials from molecular components, to design materials for a desired function, to understand molecular "self-assembly, and to improve processes by which the material is "engineered" into the final product.
