EASTERN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND STAFF VOLUNTEER FOR CHESTER CLEAN-UP DAY

St. Davids, PA, August 31, 2009:  About 500 Eastern University students, faculty and staff volunteered for Chester's 7th annual Citywide Cleanup on Saturday, August 29.  The largest group participating, Eastern volunteers targeted open lots, playgrounds, and neighborhood streets, picking up debris, and cutting grass and high weeds. Working alongside residents, they painted fences, hauled out trash, and did yard work.

Students arrived at City Hall in Chester, PA, at 9:30 a.m. where Mayor Wendell N. Butler, Jr.  greeted the volunteers. From there, they were sent out to various work sites throughout the city.

The Cleanup event is designed to promote a better quality of life and to encourage all residents to participate in making the city a cleaner, better place.  Eastern University students are encouraged to take an active role in bettering their communities and neighborhoods through volunteer work and community service.  Cleanup events provide students with the opportunity to carry out the University mission of Faith, Reason and Justice in their neighborhoods and communities.

As part of Service Learning, this event is coordinated by Andrew Horvath, M.Div., Director of Service Learning and Campus Ministries at Eastern. He says, "A hearty thank you to all who participated in our Kick-Off Day! I am grateful for our faculty's extra time commitment (several professors traveling a good distance) and for your willingness to get dirty alongside your classes. I truly appreciate it, and your students do as well."

WPVI-TV6 turned out for the big event and interviewed Eastern students Sara Underwood and Becca Ortego. They made this report on their 6p.m. newscast:
