STUDENT KATIE GIRSCH WINS ST. ANDREWS SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP
St. Davids, PA, June 12, 2009: Eastern University sophomore Katie Girsch was selected by the St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia Foundation to receive a full-year coveted scholarship to study at The University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The 20-year-old Templeton Honors College student will spend the 2009-2010 academic year pursuing her two majors, philosophy and biblical studies, at St. Andrews.
"In the same way that learning to write papers in the Templeton Honors College for my Augustine professor challenged me to become a better writer, I believe that studying in Scotland will forge me into a better scholar," Girsch said.
On campus, Girsch is a member of Ethel's swing dance club and Eastern Theological Society, and serves as a resident advisor in Gough Residence Hall. In addition, Girsch is frequently seen playing ultimate freebee, drawing and painting.
"Philosophy and biblical studies are more than academics for me; they are a way for me to embrace what I love through rigorous scholarly study," Girsch said. "I believe that the ancient Scottish universities share this same passion, not just for philosophy and biblical studies, but for all disciplines, and will provide me with the tools to continue my education in these fields."
Girsch, a 3.9 GPA student, attributes much of her academic success to her professors and coursework at Eastern. The Templeton Honors College at Eastern University is designed to challenge and prepare academically gifted undergraduate students for leadership and service as individuals of influence in culture, society and their professions by providing a holistic program focused on the life of the mind, character formation and skill development.
"I've gotten to know so many of my professors on a personal level and they have been incredibly open, supportive and uplifting," Girsch said. "The more I learn, the more I want to teach people that there are intelligent, logical, even beautiful, reasons to study the Bible and believe what it says."
Girsch is not only excited to represent Eastern University in Scotland and immerse herself in a rich learning experience, she also hopes to experience the richness of Scottish culture and learn about her own heritage in western civilization.
