MARIA HORNING ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

St. Davids, PA, December 14, 2011: The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) http://www.cosida.com again recognized Eastern University setter Maria Horning as an Academic All-American. Horning was the only member of the Capital One Academic All-America 1st Team who played in the National Finals in St. Louis.

Horning was joined on the list by fellow four-time All-American and AVCA Division III National Player of the Year Rebecca Kamp of Calvin College. Kristen Bennett of Oterbein, Jenna Eschelman of Blufton, Tricia McCutchan of Case Western, and Jessica Zavatchen of Bethany College were also on the 1st Team. Kamp was named as the Academic All-America Performer of the Year. Horning and McCutchan earned recognition on the first team in 2010.

Horning's accomplishments on the court are too numerous to delineate here, but her career record of 133-15 and four straight All-America honors are a good place to start. Fellow senior Courtney Reinhold and Kamp are the only other four-time All-Americans in this graduating class. Horning served as a three-year captain in the program and led the Eagles to four straight 30+ win seasons.

Her final season of competition was highlighted by a fourth straight Conference Championship and a trip to the Final Four. Horning was named the Most Outstanding Player at the NCAA Regional. She has a 3.99 GPA (one A- in her first six semesters of College) in Economic Development. Horning has received myriad local honors as well. For example, she was recognized as the MAC Scholar Athlete for Volleyball, she has twice earned Academic All-Area Volleyball Performer of the Year from Philadelphia CoSIDA, and was named as the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Female Performer of the Year by that same organization.  Horning is the first Eastern University Athlete to earn Academic All-American recognition.
