THREE ATHLETIC TEAMS BATTLE FOR FREEDOM CHAMPIONSHIP

St. Davids, PA, November 7, 2008: The Eastern University volleyball, women's soccer and field hockey teams are competing in the Finals for the Freedom Conference Championship on Saturday, November 8. The women's soccer team will host Delaware Valley at 1:00 p.m. on Olson Field; the women's volleyball team will host defending Freedom Conference Champion DeSales at 6:00 p.m. in the gymnasium; and the field hockey team will play away at Wilkes University at noon.

The top-seeded volleyball team led the way with a dominating 3-0 win over Wilkes University in their Freedom Semifinal game on Wednesday night, November 5. The 32-1 Eagles have spent the last half of the season in the National Top 25 and have not dropped a set in Freedom Conference Play. Eastern's potent attack leads the nation in hitting percentage.

Corie BrantCoach Birtwistle's young squad will have to unseat the defending champion Bulldogs of DeSales University in Saturday's 6:00 p.m. Championship game. The Eagles beat DeSales in a closely contested three-set match on October 23.

Women's soccer also played Wilkes for their Semifinal on Wednesday. Senior left back Corie Brant, a native of Gilbertsville, PA, put together a stunning three-goal first half to help the top-seeded Eagles to a 6-0 win. In 2007, Brant earned 1st Team All-PAC recognition as she started all 23 matches for the 19-4 Eagles.  The team is 8-0 at home in 2008 with a 31-1 scoring advantage.

Linsay MoyerField hockey earned the second seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament and will be seeking a trip to the NCAA National Tournament when they travel to Wilkes on Saturday. They punched their ticket to the finals with a convincing 5-0 win over former PAC rival Misericordia University. The Eagles are led by Junior Lindsay Moyer, a native of Telford, PA, who leads the team with 16 goals and 7 assists. In 2007, Moyer was on the 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Regional and Academic All-PAC Team.

The five EU fall athletic teams that played a full slate of Freedom Conference games finished with a combined record of 30-8-1, in the Eagles first year in the Conference. Four of the five teams advanced to post-season tournaments, and three out of five teams have reached the Freedom Conference Finals. The men's soccer team fell just short, losing in the Semifinal round to Misericordia University on Thursday, November 6.
