EASTERN UNIVERSITY EDUCATION FACULTY SERVE ON PA DEPT. OF EDUCATION STANDARDS COMMITTEES
St. Davids, PA, April 17, 2008: Helen Loeb, Ph. D., Heewon Chang, Ph. D., and Karen Piscopo M.Ed., three Eastern University faculty members, are currently serving on Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards Committees. The Standards Committees are charged with fulfilling the advisory functions imposed by the Professional Educator Discipline Act.
Dr. Helen Loeb, Emeritus Professor and Associate Dean of The Loeb School of Education, serves on the committee to develop standards for the Early Childhood Education certificate and the committee to develop the new Middle Level certificate. Dr. Heewon Chang, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Graduate Education, serves on the committee to develop a new Program Review Process. Karen Piscopo serves on the committee to develop the new Elementary and Secondary Special Education certificates.
For the last two years, Dr. Loeb has served on the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards Committee. Her involvement in the organization has not only increased her personal ties to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, but has benefited the Education Department at Eastern University as well.
“It’s an honor to be chosen to serve on the committee,” Dr. Loeb said. “It’s very beneficial because we are on the forefront of any changes that are made at the State level. At Eastern, thanks to this involvement, we can change our programs to meet the new standards quickly and efficiently.”
The roles that Dr. Loeb, Dr. Chang and Ms. Piscopo play on these committees impact all of the colleges and universities that offer teacher education programs.
“The Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards Committees is a very significant thing,” Dr. Loeb said. “These are the standards that are applied to all education facilities on the State level, so having an integral part on this decision making is really crucial for us as individuals, and as a cumulative unit of Eastern University.”
Dr. Loeb has forty years of teaching experience at all levels. She received her B.A. from Glassboro State College (Rowan College), her M.Ed. from Temple University, and her Ph.D. in Child Development and Education from Bryn Mawr College.
