EASTERN RETIRES TONY CAMPOLO’S NO. 8 BASKETBALL JERSEY

St. Davids, PA, April 24, 2008: The No. 8 Eastern University Men’s Basketball jersey of Dr. Tony Campolo, professor emeritus, was retired on March 12, 2008 to honor his life-long work of promoting the Gospel within the Eastern community and throughout the world.

Dr. Campolo, who graduated from Eastern University with his undergraduate degree in 1956, has served at Eastern for nearly 35 years as a professor of sociology.  With an extensive speaking schedule, he has provided ministry to young people, particularly those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, throughout the U.S. and around the world.  He founded the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in two-thirds world countries.

“Tony truly speaks to the ethos of the university due to his nature and embodies our faith, reason and justice,” Chaplain Joe Modica said.  “He truly personifies what Eastern is all about.”

In addition, Dr. Campolo served as the first Board Chair for Eastern’s School for Social Change (http://www.eastern.edu/academic/ccgps/inst/tonycampolo.html).  During that time he shared his intentional vision for the world with the collective Eastern community. The Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies was named in his honor.

“I think Tony Campolo’s name, and what he has done across the country, has been a huge part of our program here at Eastern,” said Matt Nadelhoffer, assistant director of Athletics and Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “He’s truly proof and a living example of what kind of leaders are produced here at Eastern.”

A banner celebrating the retirement of Dr. Campolo’s No. 8 jersey will hang in the Eastern University gymnasium and his jersey will be framed as a symbol of his impact on the community.  He was a member of the first graduating class of Eastern University that played basketball for all four years.  During his senior season (1955-56) Tony Campolo was a team captain and finished second on the squad in scoring (averaging 10 points per game).

Most importantly, his passion for social justice and boundless energy in serving God’s people motivate students, faculty and staff alike at Eastern University to try to emulate his passion for Christian leadership.  “I call Tony our own Patron Saint,” said Joseph Modica, University chaplain.  “It’s funny, but very true.  In all ways, his teaching and life here in the community exemplify faith, reason, and justice and it is an honor to work with Tony. He embraces not only the relationship of an individual to Jesus Christ, but also as an individual working in society. He has embodied this collective gospel.  Tony is appreciated and his prolific voice speaks volumes not only in the Eastern University community, but also in the world.”

An advocate for social justice, renowned motivational speaker, and a prolific author, Dr. Campolo has appeared on Nightline, Larry King Live and CNN News. He hosts a program on the Premier Radio Network in England called “From Across the Pond,” and has written over 30 books.
