ROAD CLOSING AFFECTS TRAFFIC TO ST. DAVIDS CAMPUS

PennDOT Replacing Damaged Stone Bridge on King of Prussia Road

St. Davids, PA, April 21, 2009:  PennDOT (PA Department of Transportation) has informed Eastern University that they have closed King of Prussia Road in Radnor Township, near the main entrance to Eastern University at 1300 Eagle Road, for bridge repairs.  This work began April 20 and is expected to take three to four weeks to complete. (See the official PennDOT news release below.)

In the meantime, all students, faculty, staff and visitors are asked to follow the PennDOT posted detour or seek alternate routes and to give themselves extra time to arrive on the St. Davids campus. You may also have a longer wait to exit the campus onto Eagle Road.

Please inform your family, guests and friends of this road closing, especially those who will drive to campus for the May 9 Commencement ceremonies.

KING OF PRUSSIA ROAD CLOSING IN RADNOR TOWNSHIP, DELAWARE COUNTY, DUE TO BRIDGE DAMAGE

King of Prussia, PA, April 20, 2009: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDot) announced that it is closing King of Prussia Road in Radnor Township, Delaware County, this evening due to severe structural damage to the stone masonry bridge near the intersection of Gulph Creek Road.  Construction to repair the bridge is expected to take three to four weeks to complete. The bridge spanning Gulph Creek was built in 1935 and carries approximately 16,000 vehicles a day.  It is 17 feet long and 22 feet wide.

A posted detour will take King of Prussia Road through traffic over Matsonford Road, Route 320, South Gulph Road and Croton Road.  Local access will be maintained up to the closed bridge, which is located between the intersections of Gulph Creek Road and Biddulph Road. PennDOT is closing the structure because of severe damage to a wing wall that supports the roadway approach to the bridge.  The damaged portion of the wall is 12 feet wide by 12 feet high.

PennDOT District Executive Lester Toaso said the bridge is being closed in the best interest of public safety. "Safety is first and foremost in all aspects of our operations and the precarious state of this bridge wall requires us to take this emergency action.  Crews will start work tomorrow (April 21) to rebuild the damaged wall and we aim to reopen King of Prussia Road as soon as possible."
