EASTERN UNIVERSITY’S TEMPLETON HONORS COLLEGE PRESENTS PHILIP JENKINS, PH.D.
St. Davids, PA, January 10, 2008: The Templeton Honors College at Eastern University presents Philip Jenkins Ph.D. on Thursday, January 31 at 7 p.m. as a part of Eastern’s “Conversations that matter” moderated lecture series. After presenting this discussion, Dr. Jenkins will speak again on Friday, February 1 at 10 a.m. in McInnis Auditorium.
Jenkins is a distinguished professor of History and Religious Studies at Penn State University. Also widely known for his work on both global Christianity and emerging religious movements, Dr. Jenkins is one of the leading experts today on the growth and future of Christianity, new and emerging religious movements; and of 20th century U.S. history, chiefly post-1970 history and crime.
Since 1979, he has published 20 books which have been translated into 10 different languages and over 200 book chapters, referenced articles and book reviews. His latest book, God's Continent: Christianity, Islam and Europe's Religious Crisis (2007) is a study of religious change and conflict in contemporary Europe with a focus on Muslim-Christian interaction. His other recent successful titles include: The Next Christendom: The Rise of Global Christianity (2002), Decade of Nightmares: The End of the 1960s and the Making of Eighties America (2006) and The New Faces of Christianity: Believing the Bible in the Global South (2006).
Dr. Jenkins will be discussing the issues surrounding his best-selling book, The Next Christendom (2002). In this work, Dr. Jenkins describes the expansion of Christianity in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, the effects this rapid movement has had on the southern hemisphere and its revolutionary implications for the Church in the 21st century.
Dr. Jenkins’ accolades speak for themselves. The Next Christendom was named one of the Top Religion Books of 2002 by USA Today, and won many additional awards including the 2002 Theologos award of the Association of Theological Booksellers for the year’s Best Academic Book and the 2003 Christianity Today Book Award. The New Faces of Christianity won the 2006 Theologos award of the Association of Theological Booksellers for the year’s Best Academic Book.
