EASTERN UNIVERSITY WELCOMES 14 NEW FACULTY

St. Davids, PA, September 4, 2008:  Eastern University is proud to welcome 14 new faculty members for the 2008-2009 academic year.  “We are privileged to have such a gifted and diverse group of scholars join the Eastern community, a group for whom the common ground is the integration of faith, reason and justice in their lives and in their work,” said Provost David King.  These new faculty members bring expertise in a range of subjects including English, leadership studies, philosophy, nursing and international economic development.

Christopher Anderson joins Eastern’s psychology department from Temple University where he served as an assistant professor of psychology.  He earned his B.A. in psychology from Binghamton University and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Albany. 


Monir Atta-alla earned his B.A. and M.A. from the College of Education at Assiut University in Egypt, and his Ph.D. from Assiut University and from Glasgow University of Scotland.  He joins the department of education/ESL at Eastern as an associate professor. 


Lindy Backues joins Eastern from Tasikmalaya, Indonesia, where he served as an economic development consultant/co-coordinator for the “Yayasan Perisai Biru” or the Blue Shield Relief Foundation, which serves to provide relief and support in the wake of the Indonesian Tsunami.  He also served as a program overseer of Tsunami Response for the Millennium Relief and Development Services.   He joins Eastern’s economic development department as an assistant professor. 


Beth Birmingham returns to Eastern as an associate professor in the leadership and change department.  She earned her B.A. from West Chester University, her MBA in international economic development from Eastern University, and her Ph.D. in leadership and change from Antioch University.


Amy Brown earned her B.S. from Lafayette College and her Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo.  Brown joins the chemistry department as a visiting professor. 


JoAnn Flett is a graduate of Eastern with a master in business administration.  She earned her bachelor of biblical studies from Prairie Bible College, Canada, her associate of arts and sciences from Bellevue Community College and completed course work in Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary.  Flett  is serving in Eastern’s management department as a visiting professor. 


Doug Horton comes to Eastern from Cabrini College and joins Eastern’s biokinetics department.  He received his B.S. in health and exercise science from Eastern and completed his certification at Rowan University.  He later went on to earn his M.S. in kinesiology from Indiana University. 


Vickie Blue Lemay joins the English department as an assistant professor.  She earned her B.A. from the University of New Hampshire, her M.Ed. from the University of Utah, her M.A. from Boston College, and her Ph.D. in English from Indiana University. 


Kesha Morant earned her Ph.D. from Howard University in intercultural and rhetorical communication, an M.A. from Pennsylvania State University (Harrisburg) in Humanities and a B.A. in Speech Communication from West Chester University.  Morant joins the communications studies department. 


Catherine Neimetz joins Eastern from the University of Pittsburgh where she served as an adjunct faculty member, a teaching fellow, and research assistant.  She earned her bachelor’s degree in special and elementary education from Clarion University, her master’s degree in education, and her Ph.D. in applied developmental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.  She is an assistant professor in the education department. 


Faith Ngunjiri earned her bachelor of education from Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya, her master’s degree in mission studies from Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology, her second master’s degree in organizational development from Bowling Green State University, and her Ph.D. in leadership studies from the same institution.  She joins Eastern’s leadership and development department from Yale University, where she managed a program on ethics and spirituality in the workplace.


Mary Anne Peters re-joins the nursing department from her position as director of the graduate nursing program at La Salle University.  She earned her BSN from Pennsylvania State University, her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania and her doctorate of nursing science from Widener University.  Peters served in Eastern’s nursing department as an associate professor from 1999-2003.


Katrina Rutt earned her bachelor’s degree from Eastern University and her master’s degree from West Chester University.  Rutt serves in the English department as an affiliate instructor. 


Russel Snell comes to Eastern from North Park University where he was director of the honors program and assistant professor of  philosophy.  He earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Marquette University and serves as an associate professor in the philosophy department at Eastern.
