EASTERN AWARDED $59,000 GRANT FROM THE W.W. SMITH CHARITABLE TRUST

St. Davids, PA, Sept. 18, 2008:  Eastern University is pleased to announce that it has received a grant of $59,000 from The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust.  This award is to continue to fund students who are enrolled as full-time Eastern University undergraduate students and have a financial need for the 2008-2009 academic year.  All 26 recipients are permanent residents in the Delaware Valley including Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties.

In the last 32 years, more than 1,000 students annually have been assisted in their educational plans through grants and work scholarships provided by The Smith Trust.  Student awards are based on financial need and academic performance.  The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust was established under the will of William Wikoff Smith, principal owner of Kewanee Oil Company, who died in 1976.  The Smith Trust is one of the largest private foundations in Philadelphia, awarding about $8 million annually to support medical research, college scholarships, and social services for children and the elderly.
