Politics and the City Panel and New Film About Poverty

St. Davids, PA, September 21, 2012: You are cordially invited to attend two events sponsored by the Urban Studies Department at Eastern University. Both will be held on Wednesday, October 3 at the Eastern University Falls Center located at 3300 Henry Avenue in Philadelphia, PA.

Politics and the City
State Representative Elect Jordan Harris, former Philadelphia Youth Commissioner, will lead a panel of elected officials in discussing urban politics. Learn how to effect change in your community by working through the political system. The panel will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Falls Center Room 324. A debriefing will follow at 4-5:30 p.m. in Falls Center Room 303.

Film Screening: The Line
The Urban Studies Department will present a special screening of The Line, a new groundbreaking documentary from Emmy Award-winning producer Linda Midgett. The film will begin at 6 p.m. in the Turner Auditorium at the Falls Center. A discussion facilitated by Dr. Drick Boyd, Associate Professor of Urban and Interdisciplinary Studies, will follow the film presentation.

The Line chronicles the new face of poverty in America. From Chicago's suburbs and west side to the Gulf Coast to North Carolina, millions of Americans are struggling every day to make it above the poverty line. They have goals. They have children. They work hard. They are people like you and me. As Sojourners CEO Jim Wallis puts it, "More and more of our friends are in poverty - in the pews, in our workplaces - through no fault of their own, and they are slipping below the poverty level."

To RSVP for either of these events, contact the Urban Studies Department at 215-769-3120 or urbanstudies@eastern.edu. Learn more  about the MA in Urban Studies program at Eastern University.
