Academy Charter School Students at Model UN

St. Davids, PA, March 19, 2012: Ten students from the Eastern University Academy Charter School had the privilege of attending one of the premier Model United Nations (UN) conferences in the world, sit in the seats of the General Assembly, and meet with a UN Ambassador. The Academy Charter School is located at the Falls Center, 3300 Henry Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19129.

This March, a delegation of ten Charter School students travelled to New York City to represent the Republic of Kazakhstan at the National High School Model United Nations Conference (NHSMUN).  This was truly the best in real world learning. Students sat at the same conference table as Ambassador Aitimova of Kazakhstan at the Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and spoke about the water crisis in the Middle East to 200 delegates.

In preparation for NHSMUN, the delegation represented Australia at the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference (ILMUNC) in Philadelphia. Eastern was the only urban, minority, low-income school in attendance.  Over 2000 students participated in the conference with the largest delegation, 800 students, coming from China.

Model UN conferences are academic simulations of the United Nations with the objective of seeking solutions to various problems of the world through discussion, negotiation and debate. The research and preparation that is required along with the involvement and interaction with students from all over the world combine to provide an intensive learning platform for personal development as well as world issues and diplomacy.

“This experience exemplifies what we have always dreamed for our school,” said Principal Omar Barlow, who is also CEO of the Eastern University Academy Charter School.  He applauded the efforts of first-year teacher and Model UN Faculty Advisor Elyse Sholk for making this critical investment in our students by leveraging all of her contacts and experiences with the Model UN program for the benefit of our students.

These experiences have been life changing for the student delegates.  The school hopes to send a delegation to the We Explore Model United Nations Conference (WEMUN) in China this summer.  Efforts are already underway to raise funds for round-trip transportation between Philadelphia and Beijing, hotel, and conference costs.  The students have developed a fundraising page on www.Indiegogo.com for this purpose.  Eastern University Academy is a 501c3 Non-Profit and also approved by the State of Pennsylvania for Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC).
