Chaytor, D. (Director). (2002). Rhythm, Rhyme & Life: Spoken Word and the Oral Tradition. 51 minutes, color. Produced by Bunce Island Media.

Numerous African-American poets, including Delores Kendrick, Poet Laureate of Washington, DC, share their perspectives on poetry reading-performance in the light of the African oral tradition. Many of them connect the oral tradition of African Americans with that of West Africa from which most African slaves to America originated. To live and continue this oral tradition, they "perform" their poems in public by reading, rapping, singing, or dramatizing them with or without musical accompaniment. They argue that oral performances create the interaction between poets and the audience and make this literary form live.  The Black Literary Movement in Washington, DC (a part of the "Harlem Renaissance") also integrated this element of oral tradition, according to interviewees.  While the excerpts of interviews, interspersed with poetry performances, engender insightful perspectives on the African-American oral tradition, it is at times challenging to figure out where this collection of interviews will ultimately lead the viewers.  If the viewers do not expect a dramatic plot development in this documentary film, they may find it informative to learn that the African-American oral tradition is extended to contemporary hip-hop culture.

Websites

Lesson Plans on the Family Education Network's Teacher Channel – TeacherVision.com
TeacherVision.com offers these instructional ideas in partnership with the National Association for Music Education. Each of the following pages contain links to instructional ideas (no more than 12, no less than 7) that incorporate multicultural music, and some of the content is listed on more than one of the pages. Each instructional idea includes a detailed list of objectives, materials, procedures, suggested grade levels, and standards correlations; some ideas also include links to printable materials such as maps and quizzes. TeacherVision.com is a commercially operated website that contains a fair amount of advertising content and offers annual for-pay and 7-day free-trial memberships. Some of the printable materials suggested in the instructional ideas are only available to members.

LESSON PLANET - Multicultural Music
http://www.lessonplanet.com/search/Art_and_Music/Music/Multicultural_Music

LESSON PLANET is another commercially operated website; it offers limited-access free memberships (limited to the top three results which reduces access from 35,000 to over 3,000 lesson plans according to their membership sign-up web page) and unlimited for-pay memberships. Thus a free membership only allows full access to three of the reported 2551 lesson plans found in multicultural music. Full paid memberships allow the user access to all lesson plans and to advanced searching criteria such as lesson duration, teaching method, and grade level. In essence LESSON PLANET is a highly specialized search engine - the content on LESSON PLANET is actually links to lesson plans on other websites that are reviewed by teaching professionals, rated, and categorized. Because the actual content on LESSON PLANET is gathered from independent sources, the instructional ideas are not presented in a standardized way; however, most seem to contain at least objectives, materials, and procedures.
