Dr. John Pauley, a communication scholar from the University of Texas at Austin, and a professor and department chair at Eastern University, is well known for his research of religion and communication. A member of the Religious Communication Association and the National Communication Association, Pauley was the editor of The Journal of Communication and Religion from 2006 through 2009. His work has been featured in several scholarly journals. Some of Pauley's well-known publications include "Jesus in a Chevy? The Rhetoric of Boundary-Work in Contemporary Christian Music," and The Political Pulpit Revisited (co-edited with Roderick P. Hart).
Prior to coming to Eastern University, Pauley served on the faculty of Saint Mary's College. Starting in 1991, he ultimately became Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, Dance and Theatre. He also served as Chair of the Faculty Assembly and Chaired the Faculty Compensation Committee on two separate occasions. Pauley came to Eastern in the summer of 2007 and currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department Communication Studies. In the spring of 2011 he was elected Moderator of the Faculty Senate.
Pauley received a B. A. in Religious Education from Southwestern College in 1973, followed by an M. Div. in Biblical Studies at the Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary in 1977. In 1989, he would earn an M. A. in Speech Communication from the University of Texas at Austin. In 1991, he completed his Ph. D. in Speech Communication, also from the University of Texas at Austin.
