Watchmen Prayer Ministry, an Eastern University student ministry, has written prayers for President Matthews and the EU Community for each day of Celebration Week. Please join us this week in praying the daily prayers below!
We give you thanks for the leadership of President Matthews. We are grateful for this week of commemoration where we can, as one community, come together to celebrate his leadership both now and in the years to come. We give thanks in his acceptance of the call to serve. As he serves You first and foremost and as he serves our community, we ask that you would continue to fill President Matthews with a great love for Eastern. We ask that you give the strength to complete what you have asked Dr. Matthews to accomplish. On this EU Spirit day, we ask that He would be led by Your Spirit alone and provide wisdom, discernment, and direction in abundance.
Give him Your eyes, Your vision and Your perspective for the leadership of Eastern and guide us with the great plans that you have for our University. As President Matthews surrenders daily to being transformed by Your love, we pray that with his example comes the transformation of your love for our students.
President Matthews, may God bless you abundantly, in all things at all times, proving all that you need, and the will to abound in every good work.
We thank you for those who found and began Eastern College. We remember their hearts and the dedication they set forth into our foundation as an institution. We remember each and every single person that preceded us -presidents, leaders, and faculty members. We thank you for their service and for the many ways in which they invested their time, energy, and talents into Eastern. Without these servants and leaders, Eastern would not be what it is today. As Dr. Matthews officially becomes a part of this long list of incredible people, and as he steps into the role that you have in store for Him, we ask that Your hand would be upon him today and every day. We thank you for the staff members and individuals Dr. Matthews works most closely with at Eastern; thank you for strengthening and edifying those relationships. We give thanks for the transformational love that those relationships will embody and reflect. We thank you for Your insight regarding the decisions they make together, for the strength and guidance to work through the most difficult of decisions. Continue to mold them and shape them into the image of Christ. May they themselves never forget their founders; may they hold fast to the integrity of what it means to be leaders and servants. We thank you that they will make history for Your Kingdom.
President Matthews, we pray that you will grow deeper in loving the Lord with all of your heart - and with all of your soul - and with all of your mind. That you will continue to love your neighbor as yourself.
As we face our lives each day - the good and the bad, the highs and the lows, it is easy to lose sight of You and Your promises. It is easy to get caught up in our daily business. We ask that as Dr. Matthews executes his leadership and responsibilities, that He would fix His eyes on You - the author and the finisher of His faith. We ask that whenever he feels overwhelmed with presidency or life in general, that he look to you for guidance - for Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. We ask that he make time to cultivate an intimate relationship with you. That as we set aside a special day for prayer, worship, fasting, and service, that we would lay down our own agenda and that we would seek Your will alone. As Jesus’ disciples requested, we ask that you would “teach us how to pray.’” Teach us, Lord, how to be worshippers in Spirit and in Truth. Test our hearts, and renew them each day. Show us ourselves that which is hindering our fellowship with you. Show us the things in our lives that need our service and guide our steps. As we continue to wrestle with these requests, may our longing to have more of Your presence never be satisfied.
We thank you for fulfilling these requests in the life of Dr. Matthews, that as he continues in this Lenten season, we ask that you would reveal to him your great love. May he look to the cross at this time and remember your sacrifice and great love that was releveled. We give thanks for this love that transforms our lives.
President Matthews, we pray that according to the riches of his glory He may grant you strength with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love have strength to comprehend with all the saints the breadth and length and height and depth. May you know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge and may your life be filled with all the fullness of God. Amen
We thank you that we can come boldly before Your throne once again - blessed another day with this opportunity. We thank you because You are the God of the brokenhearted and the marginalized. We recognize that as we rejoice with Dr. Matthews for this new chapter in life, that there people in this world who are facing injustice. We thank you that this is at the heart and center of Eastern’s mission and that of Dr. Matthew’s. We give thanks for faith and reason and also for justice. We thank you because we can yet weep with those who weep. At the same time, we are grateful as we continue fighting for justice. That you give us the strength and fortitude to continue in this work until all are free. We thank you because our love for each of these individuals is real - not simply consisting of ‘thoughts and prayers’ but backed up by an active pursuit of justice. We thank you for our campus ministries that provide a way for us to do this so well and for abundance of work that the ministry does so that we can meet the needs of many. We thank you for the ways in which these ministries meet the brokenhearted and the marginalized right where they are. We thank you for the nonprofits, churches, and the other organizations that we have been involved in and continue to be involved in and to serve. We thank you for the broken and marginalized lives that have been transformed by Your love, for the justice that has been served thus far. We thank you for your promise to one day, make all things new, until then, may Dr. Matthews be found faithful in Your sight: faithful to the pursuit of justice.
President Matthews, we pray that you would grow to love even deeper in both truth and in deed, not merely in words, but action. Thank you for all you do and have done thus far.
You, we pray to you today on this important day for Eastern. We thank you for the many blessings that You have poured out upon our campus this week. We ask that you would fill Dr. Matthews with Your peace and joy - that He would experience Your love as a well that never runs dry. We ask for the confidence of God that Dr. Matthews would know it deeply and richly in all he does. We pray that he would rejoice in the truth and the knowledge that he is a child of the Living God. We pray over and give thanks for those who have worked to prepare and organize the Inauguration Service, over friends and family who are attending the service and walking alongside Dr. Matthews this week. May You grant them the wisdom needed to support him well. Holy Spirit, guide them in their deeds and actions and give them the right words to speak over his life at the right time. We thank you for using them as your vessels, vessels of your transformational love when Dr. Matthews needs it the most.
President Matthews, we pray that you may serve Eastern with faith, reason and justice now and in the years to come and that the Father may use you mightily to spread peace, joy, and righteousness throughout the community at Eastern.
