Africa Residency Model
The Africa Residency is a blended delivery model that Eastern's Leadership and Development programs have used for more than 10 years to deliver its masters degrees all over the world. Designed to accommodate the schedules of working adults who feel called to develop their skills and spiritual foundations for a potential call to leadership or to the field of development, the blended delivery model allows for the completion of the MA in International Development in two years.
Students are required to prepare for and attend a residency of two and a half weeks each year of their program, during which time they engage in two and a half days of classroom time for each of the five courses covered during the academic year. After the residency, they follow up each course, one at a time, with online discussions and completing assignments required by the courses.

The MA in International Development has traditionally required students to complete a Development Field Practicum (DFP) course in order to graduate from the program. Up until 2011, this requirement was waived for the students taking the program in Africa, based on the idea that attending the residences in Africa fulfilled at least part of the rationale for the DFP. Starting this year, however, the program will require all students to complete a DFP in order to ensure that they have the opportunity during the program to use skills acquired to a much fuller extent and to reflect on what they have learned over the course of their study.
The Development Field Practicum course requires a minimum of 250 hours of service with any organization involved in a project of social transformation, along with several other assignments. The student is required to identify the organization and make the arrangements for the DFP, including filing and submitting the paperwork required to register for the DFP. Students must have a concrete project or role with that organization in order for the time to be counted towards the DFP. Students will be responsible for tracking and submitting the hours spent working on their Development Field Practicum and for completing the other DFP course assignments as per the course syllabus. At present, these assignments include a written community development proposal, a reflection on what the student has learned during the program, and a comprehensive exam that covers areas of study throughout that program.
